So today the Cholak family ( ) from out of state and left with lots of presents 😮🤣!
All told there were a bassist, cellist, violist, and 2 violin players. In their own words they ‘bought the whole store’ and also filled the store with excellent music as each of them tried a few new instruments .

Here's a before and after that one of the luthiers from Atlantic Strings finished the other day. This was a German custom bow.
-
Before the restoration, the German bow exhibited signs of wear and aging. The silver winding had tarnished over the years, diminishing its lustrous appearance. The bow's horsehair, which had seen extensive use, was frayed and lacking in tension, affecting its ability to produce a clean, resonant sound. However, after undergoing a meticulous restoration process, the transformation was remarkable. The new silver winding gleamed, restoring the bow's elegance and charm. A fresh rehair will bring vigor to the bow, ensuring the horsehair is now evenly tensioned and ready to produce rich, nuanced tones. With these improvements, the German bow is not only visually rejuvenated but also regained its functionality and potential, breathing new life into the hands of a musician.

Amédée Dieudonné, a name revered in the world of violin making, was a master craftsman known for his exceptional contributions to the art of lutherie. Born in the late 19th century, Dieudonné's journey into the world of violins began as an apprentice to some of the finest French luthiers of his time. Through unwavering dedication and a keen eye for detail, he mastered the intricate techniques of crafting these exquisite instruments. His work quickly gained recognition for its impeccable quality, and he became known for his distinctive, rich tonal qualities and artistic designs.

What sets Amédée Dieudonné apart is not just his skill but also his innovation. He was known to experiment with varnishes and tonewoods, pushing the boundaries of violin-making traditions. His violins are sought after by musicians and collectors alike, bearing witness to the enduring legacy of a luthier who, through his artistry, breathed life into the world of music.

Born in 1875, Giulio Degani worked alongside his father Eugenio, until his death in 1915. After his fathers death, he ran the workshop until he emigrated to the United States to work for the Wurlitzer company in both New York and Cincinnati. In 1924 he opened his own workshop in Cincinnati and eventually moved back to New York where he joined Jago Peternella. This violin was made in 1910 and features exceptional handwork.

Are your pegs sticky?
Or do need new pegs for your violin, viola or cello?

These pictures show the Spiral bushings used in conjunction with violin heads with peg hole cracks.

Is this pretty?
Gotta love beautiful scrolls !

This is an early 1900's German violin getting it's scroll cleaned and fit with a new set of pegs. This violin is based of the pattern of Paolo Maggini; common characteristics of the pattern are an extra turn in the scroll as well as double purfling.
-
Do you need your scroll cleaned?
Are your pegs a bit sticky?

Be sure to come in to Atlantic Strings where all your instrument needs will be met. We have the best luthiers in all of Florida!

This is a baroque period cello from the early 1800s. Unlike modern instruments, this cello does not have a neck block, instead the neck is set in.

This cello needs quite a lot of work before it will be singing again, needing a post patch, bass bar crack as well as a new bass bar and edge doubling.

Really interesting work in progress.

This violin is one of the many fantastic instruments from the Gatchell collection.
-
Balestrieri's origin is not well established. His violin labels identify him to be from Cremona. He was born around 1735 and moved to Mantua later in life. His first known works were produced in Mantua and date to the mid-1750s, and his last works date to mid-1790s.
-
Be sure to visit Atlantic Strings either in Melbourne or Orlando to try this violin or one of the many others in the Gatchell collection.

Before and After
-
So this is an old French factory violin from the early 1900s that we recently got on trade. Was very loved in its time but needed a deep varnish cleaning, set of peg and endpin pushing and a new set of pegs.
-
Ricky at Atlantic Strings did all the work and brought this instrument back to life.
The deep rich red colors of the varnish now pop.
-
Does your violin, viola or cello need some love?
Come to Atlantic Strings and get your instrument restored to looking and sounding its best!

Mr. Gatchell doing a little bit of touchup on a violin!
-
Do you have some dings on your violin, viola, cello or bass?
Has it been along time since you’ve had your instrument touched up?
-
It’s an evitable that instrument bump into things and get nicks and scratches.
It’s always so wonderful to see the before and after of a stringed instrument after it’s touched up, polished. The look on the owners face when they see it after its been transformed his priceless! 😍!
-
Be sure to come into Atlantic Strings to get your violin, viola, cello, or bass, looking its best🎻💯… not to mention sounding its best.

Do you need a bow rehair ?
How often do you have your violin or viola or cello bow rehaired ?

While the horsehair on your bow is incredibly strong, it doesn’t last forever. The hairs become hard and brittle after months and months of playing or as seasons change in particularly humid areas. The hairs no longer grip your instrument strings like they once did — no matter how much rosin you apply!
The only way to regain the powerful, clear sound quality you crave? Rehair your bow. The rehairing process involves replacing worn strands of horsehair with new ones. But, how often do you need to change and replace your violin, viola or cello bow hair?

Pay attention to your bow, playing experience, and the environment you perform in to know when it’s time for a rehair.

Atlantic Strings expert luthier‘s recommend on average every six months. But again you need to be the judge and pay attention to them wear and tear.

So this violin was brought to us from someone who purchased it from a pawn shop.
It was made in the late 1800s by Neuner Hornsteiner. However, there is a major sound post crack on the top which essentially is a death sentence for an instrument.
But add to that a terrible repair job. Very sad 😢. Because it was massacred by a bad luthier, it will not be able to restored it to the standards of Atlantic Strings.
-
But don’t worry, there are so many amazing violins here at Atlantic Strings in every price range for beginners all the way up to the professional level that will blow you away!

Did you get a great deal from Amazon??
Did you think that you found the perfect instrument on Amazon for an amazing Amazon price?
Do you know if that instrument was handcrafted or factory made?
Do you think that an Amazon instrument will appreciate over time?
-
So many people have fallen into the trap of finding instruments on Amazon.
Don’t get me wrong. Amazon is very useful and helpful while being priced very competitively.
I myself spent $99 on Amazon so as to play it outside for two days so I I could eventually throw it out. Yep! That instrument is now in the trashcan!!
-
-
Sadly, we have seen folks purchase violins for almost $2000 thinking they got the deal of the century for a very beautiful, well constructed “handmade violin”. Then after showing such instruments to Mr. Allen Gatchell, he informs me that these instruments at the end of day are most definitely factory made, and will never have any appreciative value over the long run.
-
So be careful! Or go to www.atlanticstrings.com or go to the shops in Melbourne and Orlando to get a quality instrument that is already set up and has an amazing amount of value… excellent sound quality, playability, overall appreciative value!

Introducing Tom Sparks!!!
-
Atlantic Strings is proud to have on staff, Tom Sparks! He was the former head of Indiana University’s violin making department. He retired not so long ago and now is on our staff. Tom is not only skilled as a luthier, but also was a fiddle champion in the 90s. Stay tune for some videos whereby he is doing a demonstration for a grafted neck. The second picture in the carousel and see a little bit of what he did.

Albert truly was brilliant! I don’t think it’s any accident that he was passionate about playing the violin. As the “Fine Instrument Consultant “ of Atlantic Strings Violin Shop and member of the Philadelphia Orchestra () my teacher, Norman Carol (former Concertmaster) is 94 years old and practices every day and is still passionate about playing the violin.
A steady diet of violin is most definitely heart, soul and mind!
