Were you there? What did you think?
"We have a huge Spanish-speaking population that wasn't engaging with us, and we needed to figure out why," says Michele Figueroa, Program Manager at Pima Animal Care Center in Tucson, Arizona. "We also realized that the RTO rates were extremely low in two high zip codes for Spanish speaking. They also weren't reporting their lost animals."
PACC created a campaign reaching out specifically to those Spanish speakers when they made this connection. These assets and more have room for your organization's logo and are available to you courtesy of PACC at this link: https://bit.ly/3LBUMYp

Best Friends Lifesaving Center in NYC had a very special guest over the weekend: Alex Bowman, NASCAR driver of the No. 48 Ally Chevrolet. He stopped by to help 💨
Inspired by his personal dogs Finn and Huck (and previous dog who has since passed, Roscoe), Alex and Ally Racing have been supporting Best Friends since 2021. Since the first year, together they have given more than $650,000 to Best Friends and select network partners. For each race, Best Friends nominates a local network parter to receive a $4,800 donation -- and if Alex wins, the donation increases to $10,000! For this race, the lucky Network Partner to receive the donation was Lycoming County SPCA, located in Williamsport, Pennsylvania 👏

Tamsen Kingry, CEO of the Richmond SPCA, remembers the exact moment she questioned everything she thought she knew about who makes a good adopter. It was during a staff training session about open adoptions.
"I will never forget that the facilitator asked the room to stand up, then she proceeded to ask us a series of questions:
✅ 'If you've ever lived in an apartment where you weren't permitted to have a pet, but you did, sit down.'
✅ 'If you've ever had a pet who had not been kept up to date on vaccinations, sit down.'
The facilitator needed to ask three questions before the entire room was seated, and of course these were animal welfare professionals, and there wasn't a single one of us that were still standing.
It was at that precise moment that we all looked at each other and said, 'If we would not adopt to ourselves, then who is it that we think we're adopting to?'"

During the month of June, animal shelters and rescues across the country have been pushing themselves to try open adoption practices and host adoption and foster events as part of the Best Friends Network 🧡 Bring Love Home Challenge 🧡
Cincinnati Animal CARE is one of those organizations, so check out their fun video, which captures the spirit of the Bring Love Home Challenge by engaging their community in an unexpected, silly way to encourage people to adopt dogs for a low adoption fee.
The Bring Love Home Challenge ends this Sunday, and we're so proud of every organization that has participated. We can't wait to see the results they all worked so hard for! 🐶 😸
Do you utilize your foster families as expert adoption teams for the foster pets in their care?
Empowering fosters to facilitate adoptions can lighten your team's load. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control's huge foster base enables them to increase their capacity to nearly twice as many pets as they can hold in their building. Hear from their customer service manager Adam Carter about how Charlotte-Mecklenburg leverages their army of foster families to get involved and speed pets through the adoption process.
How involved are your foster parents in marketing their foster pets for adoption? Many foster parents are thrilled at the opportunity to help their foster pet find a home. Think of each foster family as a FREE marketing team for that pet!
Check out our tips for involving your foster parents in the marketing of their foster pets.

"If we are going to accomplish the goals that we want to accomplish in animal welfare, we need to keep people healthy," says Michael Keiley from MSPCA-Angell in Boston. "The sort of constant turnover of staff and things that are lost along the way means that we're always kind of catching up rather than moving forward."
Michael Keiley will share more about MSPCA-Angell's approach to keeping their team healthy as one of the panelists in our webinar, Caring for the People that Care for Animals: Prioritizing Staff Well-being in Animal Welfare, on Wednesday, June 26, at 5pm ET. Learn more: https://bit.ly/4bTRHOs
Bookmark these three incredibly helpful Foster Resources webpages from Paso Animal Services, One Tail at a Time, and Ruff Start Rescue. Although these organizations are very different, they've each found a way to keep their fosters feeling supported, informed, and empowered. They have dedicated pages on their websites just for their foster parents to find any information they need, from:
📌 What to do in an emergency
📌 Tips for photographing your foster pet
📌 Behavior and training tips
📌 How to send in updates
📌 What to do to get your foster pet adopted
📌 Links to their handbooks, orientations, private Facebook groups, etc.
Having all of this information in a central, easy-to-find location could minimize the amount of time your foster team spends responding to FAQs.
Do you have a centralized location where your fosters can find everything they need?
"I 'care more' because I am running myself into the ground," is a culture we must work to get away from in animal welfare if we hope to keep impactful people in the industry.

Through Best Friends’ national shelter embed program, leadership and staff from Rhea County Animal Shelter in Tennessee worked alongside a Best Friends expert who was embedded at the shelter for nine months from May 2023 through January 2024. Together they implemented proven strategies to help save more animals’ lives and move closer to no-kill.
Shelter staff now have the freedom to expand their thinking about animal welfare and consider creative ways to save more lives. That’s improving staff morale while making a big difference for the animals. According to Shelter Pet Data Alliance, the shelter’s average save rate for the past year has been 92.6%, up 30 percentage points from the previous year. Rhea County is a shining example of how far shelters can go when they embrace change and have some support.
🧩 Hiring and team culture 🧩 is a very important piece of the puzzle when it comes to promoting adoption and fostering to non-English speakers in your community. Get your team ready to welcome adopters and fosters who speak a language such as Spanish with these tips from Marisa Sutherland, Community Marketing Senior Strategist at Best Friends Animal Society.
How much of your community are you missing out on? Nearly 68 million people in the U.S. speak a language other than English at home. There is a lot of room for improvement in animal welfare as we welcome in people who speak other languages. If all shelters and rescues took action to include these members of their communities in their adopter and foster pools through communications and customer service efforts, it could potentially close the U.S. lifesaving gap, which was 415,000 pets in 2023.
Go to Shelter Pet Data Alliance at shelterpetdata.org to compare your community's lifesaving gap with the number of non-English speakers in your community, which you can find at data.census.gov.
44% of Madera County residents speak Spanish at home. Because of this, Madera County Animal Services in California has prioritized communicating in both English and Spanish.
Director Amy Toler says their many bilingual employees are critical in this process. They publish as much as they can in both languages, and not just the important legal documents. Toler says it's important to share "the fun stuff as well" with their Spanish-speaking community. You can find adoption specials, microchip clinics flyers, pet safety tips - you name it - in English and Spanish on their page.
Pro Tip: For printed documents, they put both English and Spanish into one document because it's more cost-efficient and cuts down on paperwork. It can also help non-Spanish speakers provide customer service to Spanish speakers, because they can easily reference the English word next to the Spanish word.

What percentage of your community are you missing?
Finnegan Dowling, Shelter Program and Social Media Manager at Mutual Rescue, shares some words of wisdom about the importance of including Spanish speakers in our outreach for fosters. This applies to adoption outreach and other communications too!
