Successfully Speaking
Successfully Speaking helps individuals from diverse backgrounds SPEAK, SOUND, and LOOK like Leaders
Successfully Speaking works with individuals and groups on their professional presence, including public speaking skills, voice empowerment, foreign and regional accent modification, grammar, interview skills, telephone skills, and small talk. Communication training is conducted at the workplace or through virtual training.
As part of the interview series, I asked Colleen McKenna “What is the essential skill to SPEAK, SOUND, and LOOK Like a Leader?” Here is her response:
“Communicate clearly and effectively your value proposition, what you believe, why you're a good leader, and why anybody should follow you. We look at a lot of LinkedIn profiles of senior leaders, business owners, founders, and solopreneurs, and a lot of times we have no idea what their business is. That's a missed opportunity … to showcase who you are and how you think.”

As part of the interview series, I asked Amanda Haddaway “What is the essential skill to SPEAK, SOUND, and LOOK Like a Leader?” Here is her response:
“I talked a lot about listening already…I would add … take a pause. Sometimes we listen to respond, and we do that because we think the person that we're in communication with demands an immediate response. We don't always listen to the entirety of what they're trying to communicate and convey to us…..When we take a pause… only a couple seconds, the other person isn't likely to even notice, but it allows us to hear the full message and then respond to it in its entirety.”

What words do you say frequently? Do they undermine your professional presence?
OK, Absolutely, Right…. — Successfully Speaking Do you use certain phrases or expressions repetitively throughout your conversation? "When I first started growing up, when we moved to Texas, I always wore pants when I used to go practice because I wanted to play professionally. It would be like, 100 degrees outside. They'd all be making fun of me, but I always used to wear wants. So as long as I can remember, this is what I wanted to do." - Scottie Scheffler

As part of the interview series, I asked Susan Seber “What is the essential skill to SPEAK, SOUND, and LOOK Like a Leader?” Here is her response:
“It comes down to emotional intelligence. We are a combination of our personality, our IQ, and our emotional intelligence. The best leaders have the strongest emotional intelligence and emotional intelligence starts with self-awareness. There's a formula…the more that you know about yourself and your tendencies, your triggers, and the more choices you can have, the better decisions you can make and the more success you can have. It's like a lens on the camera and the bigger you open up that lens on the camera, the more possibilities you have.”

As part of the interview series, I asked Erin Moran “What is the essential skill to SPEAK, SOUND, and LOOK Like a Leader?” Here is her response:
“Active listening is probably one of the most important skills and demonstrating curiosity in your active listening to understand who you are speaking to, what their unique needs are, and how you might be able to engage with that other human being in a more connected way.”

As part of the interview series, I asked Brian Frohn “What is the essential skill to SPEAK, SOUND, and LOOK Like a Leader?” Here is his response:
“I'm going to go with self-awareness….in the broader sense and also emotional intelligence sense, understanding what's going on inside. I define self-awareness similar to EQ, which is basically understanding what's going on inside you and knowing how to deal with it productively, so that it's not throwing you off your game. ….of course from then you can get into communication and relationships and listening… But I think that comes almost naturally or is opened up by an ever-deepening self-awareness.
And the further you go, the more you're going to be able to handle what's happening inside you, but also what's happening inside someone else. Maybe they're not as self-aware. Maybe they are taken over by mental thinking or negative thinking. Now your self-awareness is even more important because you have to be able to prevent yourself from being caught into that. Especially as a leader, because a lot of times the people around you are looking for you to have a higher level of presence and awareness even in times of stress when other people may not. I would say that self-awareness at a deepening level will then lead the way to all these other skills.”

How can you get to the point? Do you know the BLUF strategy?
BLUF Your Phone Calls — Successfully Speaking Many people prefer to send text messages rather than pick up the phone to talk. Some may believe that a text is more direct, and the receiver can read it without taking the time for a lengthy conversation. However, texts may easily be misinterpreted since they lack the nuances of vocal tone. Emojis

As part of the interview series, I asked Nettie Owens “What is the essential skill to SPEAK, SOUND, and LOOK Like a Leader?” Here is her response:
“The biggest skill that you need to have and practice every single day is envisioning your own identity as a leader and this is research backed. If we want to change our behavior, change our habits, James Clear talks about it in the book, ‘Atomic Habits.’ We have to see ourselves as the person who does the thing… every day, you are cultivating a skill of stepping into and seeing yourself in the identity as a leader. You're defining it, you're connecting to it, and you're doing things that can start bringing that vision of yourself into reality. That means how you behave, how you act, how you walk, how you talk. But it starts with seeing it first. If you can't see it, it's going to be really hard to get there.”
