IT’S TIME TO ADD “CLOSE YOUR DOOR” TO YOUR FIRE-SAFETY CHECKLIST
You know how important it is to have working smoke alarms, escape plans and a designated meeting place in case of fire. But did you know that closing the doors in your home is also essential for your safety?
Closed doors can reduce fire growth, limit damage to your home, keep temperatures down, and may even save your life if you become trapped. (Source: Underwriters Laboratories, Inc.)

The place where we should feel safest—at home—is where most smoking-materials-related structure fires, deaths and injuries occur. Smoking is still the leading cause of fire deaths; one out of four fatal victims of smoking-material fires is not the smoker whose cigarette started the fire.
And yet, smoking-material fires are preventable:
• Don’t smoke inside
• Discard smoking materials in a fire-safe container
• Use a proper, heavy ashtray that won’t tip over easily—don’t improvise

The kitchen is the heart of the home, especially during the holidays. However, unattended cooking is the leading contributing factor in cooking fires and fire deaths. More home cooking fires occur in the United States on Thanksgiving Day than on any other day of the year. Follow these safety tips to keep you and your family safe from the danger of cooking fires:
• While cooking, stay in the kitchen and keep an eye on the food on the stove
• When cooking a turkey, stay at home and check on it frequently
• Make sure children are at least three feet away from the stove at all times
• To avoid the risk of severe burns, keep children away from the steam or splash from hot foods and liquids
• Secure electric cords from appliances out of the easy reach of children (Source: NFPA)
DOES YOUR HOME HAVE CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS?
Every home with at least one fuel-burning appliance, heater, attached garage, or fireplace should have a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm. If your home has only one CO alarm, it should be installed in the main bedroom or the hallway outside the sleeping area.
These life-saving devices give you an early warning of a life-threatening event. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless and tasteless gas—known as the Silent Killer—the most abundant and deadly byproduct of fire. From plug-ins to smart devices, CO detectors vary in price and features and are readily available at home improvement stores (Home Depot, Lowes, etc.) and online. (Source: https://ow.ly/gxnj50Q8aPg)
"When Daylight Saving Time ends, many people will find themselves spending more time driving in the dark,” the National Safety Council warns. “Depth perception, color recognition and peripheral vision can be compromised in the dark, and the glare of headlights from an oncoming vehicle can temporarily blind a driver.”
Though just 25 percent of our driving is at night, 50 percent of traffic deaths occur then, according to the council, a nonprofit founded in 1913 to reduce preventable deaths.
The safety council says that a 50-year-old driver might need twice as much light to see as well as a 30-year-old. And at 60 and older, we generally see road signs less clearly, have more trouble judging speed and distance, and are bothered more when headlights glare, according to the American Optometric Association. Remember: As time and seasons shift, adapt your driving habits to avoid deadly accidents and injuries.
