Just released our fall journal! Click the link in our bio to read all these great articles. Here's the start of one case report from Gavin H. Harris, MD: A 32-year-old otherwise healthy, former Division I swimmer was surfing a longboard in 2-3 foot fickle East Coast waves. After one ride he was caught inside near shore in approximately 2-3ft of water and pulled his board in close to keep from flying out and striking other surfers. As the wave crested and broke, he grasped the leash with his right hand close to the leash-plug and the leash twisted and snapped to tension when he ducked under the lip. The surfer immediately felt a shooting pain in his right fifth digit and saw blood in the water.... read the rest in our journal!

FEATURE FRIDAY!!!
We want to present Dr. Tiffany M. Lau a PGY4 who attended The University of Kansas- School of Medicine and for residency she is at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in White Plains, NY completing her residency in PM&R! She wrote a beautiful article called Adaptive surfing and surf therapy.

🏄‍♀️Why PM&R?
My love of physiatry began with helping my Dad through his recovery process after an extensive spinal surgery and subsequent development of a foot drop. I helped him navigate the process of being fitted for an ankle foot orthosis and watched him through his rehabilitation journey. I am passionate about physiatry because it empowers patients to be more functional and helps them with their independence. I love physiatry because it focuses on the whole picture of a patient and approaches problems from unique and different perspectives.

🏄‍♀️Why surf medicine and what got you interested in surf medicine?
I love to surf and love to be in the ocean. Surf medicine for me is this amazing place where many of my passions are blended into one place.

🏄‍♀️Why did you write the article?
I am passionate about adaptive sports and helping differently abled individuals return to the sports that they love. I wrote the article highlighting adaptive surfing because I wanted to increase awareness about adaptive surfing and the benefits that surf therapy can have for people.

🏄‍♀️Do you surf?
Yes

🏄‍♀️How long?
I learned how to surf when I was in Hawaii in 2016, and have been surfing ever since.

🏄‍♀️Career goals?
Currently, I am pursuing a fellowship for sports medicine. Ideally, I would also like to work with a sporting team as a team physician and continue to work with an adaptive sports program. It would be amazing to continue working with surf medicine as well.

🏄‍♀️What are you interested in?
Aside from surfing and sports medicine I am interested in regenerative medicine and the technologies and advancements that are currently being developed. My hobbies include baking, hiking and spending time with my family and friends.

Continue sending us your research and your work!

🏄‍♀️ FEATURE FRIDAY!!! We are highlighting some interesting research from our followers and members! For our first, we are so happy to introduce Claudia Jimenez. She is a PGY2who attended the University of Puerto Rico Medical School and is currently at the University of Puerto Rico Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program!

Dr. Jimenez has been very proactive in surfing medicine and recently published an article on the kinetic chain amongst surfers!

🏄‍♀️Why did you choose PM&R?
Out of all of the fields in medicine, PM&R is the one that called my attention because it helps the patient rekindle their goals. We help patients see beyond disease and help them reconnect with their sense of self by motivating them in new ways to live an empowered life with their goals and passions. It is a true team approach!

🏄‍♀️Why are you interested in Surf Medicine?
I love Surfing, it is my favorite sport. It has a unique healing power for the mind and body and it is a sport that you can practice for a life time. Maximizing the body’s mechanical potential through understanding biomechanics and how this translates to injury prevention and elite performance is a true driving force.

🏄‍♀️Do you surf?
I do, I learned when I was about five years old from my dad who used to push me on a foam board until I could eventually hold my own paddling. I’ve loved being in the water as long as I can remember.

🏄‍♀️What got you interested in amputee medicine?
I have always been inspired by the resilience of the amputee population especially in sports. I think they are truly inspiring because despite the mental and physical challenges in their path, relearning how to do what you love in a new way, the amputee population with athletes such as in surfing just keeps defying the odds of what we thought was possible. They are inspiring us to believe in our ability to achieve our goals no matter how difficult or impossible they may seem.

🏄‍♀️What are you interested in and career goals?
I have a particular interest in adaptive sports and I would love to further develop adaptive sports in Puerto Rico.
