Located in the heart of historic downtown, the PAPA Gallery is Paducahās most unique and exciting gallery featuring the original art from almost 100 local and regional artists. The large, well-lit gallery welcomes all to browse and experience the art. The show changes four times a year keeping the gallery fresh and insuring you can find the perfect original to grace your home or office.
Ellen Hunt
PAPAs featured artist this month, Ellen Hunt, gives us space to contemplate with her painting "Where are the Clouds." The bright color in the yellow dress, ribbon and basket of flowers may get your attention at first, but then you might tend to look along with the girl toward the fork in the path. Is she deciding which path to take or is she reflecting on the road already taken? Maybe her goal is to leave us with a little mystery. Like many artists, Ellen painted as a self-proclaimed "dabbler" for many years, but you'll see that "dabbler" has clearly not applied for a long time. Her use of color and depth draws the viewer in to discover more in the paintings of her special exhibit. Join us this month for a unique peek at the artistic talent of Ellen Hunt. We love to simply enjoy art with you!

Just a Heads Up! Tomorrow look for an album of photos from the new Members Show
Sunrise is a unique time of day. It can mean time to wake up, the end of a long shift at work, the remembrance of warmth after a cold night, the promise of a new day. PAPA's painting challenge this month was "A Sunrise" and true to their artistic individuality, our painters imagined a wide array of sunrises. āBasking in the Beauty of a Sunriseā by Debbie Dupre is one such image. If you've ever stood facing the sun as it rises, you'll know something of what the person in this painting feels as the warm rays first touch. You might even get goose bumps! Come by this month to enjoy watching a few sunrises. We love to simply enjoy art with you!

Meet Ellen Hunt, Featured Artist August 2024
I was born to parents who barely survived the Great Depression of 1939, so there was no money to waste, but my mother encouraged me in art and furnished me with basic inexpensive supplies. My daddyās art consisted of drawing house plans on a napkin, and then built the house from that plan. Today, thatās not allowed but back in the 1950ās it was fine. Since he was a carpenter, I used his scrap pieces of lumber to paint on. I didnāt know that it was called āplein air paintingā at the time, but I would go outside and sit and paint whatever I saw. I loved smelling the sawdust from his lumber while I painted.
In third grade, my teacher gave us big sheets of paper and crayons and asked us to draw the tree outside of the classroom window. It was what she looked at everyday as she taught us Reading, Writing and Arithmetic. She chose my āartā to take home and frame and hang above her mantle!!! I guess that was one of the first encouragements for me to do something artistic. As life went on, I decided I wanted to be a nurse, so I never took any formal art classes, but continued to dabble in it whenever I could because my heart was always there. After marrying, and having children, I always tried to encourage them to paint. My youngest son is quite talented but not interested right now. Whenever I heard of art classes of any kind, I was thrilled if I could take a class here and there. After my boys were grown, something WONDERFUL happened! Where I was working, one of Clyde Lawterās daughters worked there also, and she started bringing his art in to hang on the walls of her office. I was captivated! Whenever I could, I would go to her office and gaze as long as possible at those exciting paintings. One day I asked if he gave lessons, and miraculously was able to paint with him weekly for 10 years!!! It was blissful, but life moves on and things change. I am painting alone now. It is so relaxing for me, and I hope when you look at anything Iāve painted, you feel as much peace as I did when I created it.
I like to try new things, so I do some pastels, some oils, a little watercolor, but mostly acrylics.
PAPA Artists love a challenge. Our latest entries were revealed at our Member Meeting on Tuesday night. See āA Sunriseā at the Gallery now, and in our online exhibit, including more entries, at the link below:

Randy Simmons, Paducah School of Art and Design, treated PAPA members and guests to a behind-the-scenes look at his creation process by walking us through one of his latest works, "It's Not a Question of If, But When". Inspired by a creased snapshot of his Mom with a scratched out figure, stories she told him, and his own personal experiences, the work begins. Shapes, especially circles, and elements with special meaning are added to symbolize those personal experiences and complete the picture.
Find more about Randy and his incredible, large scale charcoal drawings, video shorts, and much more, on his website: https://randysimmonsdrawings.com/

When youāre hot and uncomfortable in the July heat, sometimes even a picture of a cool restful place can make you feel better. Vickie Lee Gingrich shares one of those images with us in her painting, Tea in Paradise. Drop by when youāre downtown and transport yourself into this little vision of paradise for a few minutes. Imagine the feel of the cool air deep in the shade and the fragrance of the flowers mixed with the indefinable aroma of green things. Notice the loveliness of the tea set as it invites you to come enjoy. Vickieās landscape paintings always seem to beckon you inside. You can get more of a taste of her style with other of her paintings in our current show. During these hot summer months, treat yourself to a little ahhh. Come by the Gallery and simply enjoy art with us!

Come in this month to experience her uniquely expressive style and see all the other imaginative images our artists have created for you. Have you ever considered that self portraits are not limited to just paint and canvas? They could be a story or song for a writer, a colorful flower bed for a gardener or even a signature dish for someone that loves to cook. The current challenge for PAPA artists is Self Portrait and this special exhibit is full of revelation! We invite you to come visit with these portraits and see what our artists have to tell you about themselves. You may enjoy their work even more after you visit with their portraits and it may also prompt you to think about your own self portrait! Come by this month and see. We always love to enjoy art with you!

Bailey Joyce, Featured Artist July 2024
Bailey has been drawing all her life and began painting in high school. She finds inspiration in traveling, nature, and art history, as well as characters and environments both whimsical and strange. Baileyās preferred tools are ink, graphite, acryla gouache, and colored pencil, but she often incorporates digital illustration in Photoshop. A graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design, Bailey earned a BFA in Illustration. She is passionate about illustrating educational childrenās books, as well as creating commercial illustrations and murals. Get in touch if youāre interested in a commission or purchasing work!

And now for the Challenge of the Month - Self Portraits, and One Portrait
The Challenge this month was Self Portrait. Becca and Mark had each artist show and talk about their art. It was such fun that I've decided to do one post of each artist and their art, up close, and this post showing sort of a running documentation of that part of our meeting. Maybe you'll almost feel like you were there. That lady in the black seemed to be getting a bit intense, hmmm.
Meeting Night again! It's always fun to get together, hear the news, see some art, have a program and eat. Last night Diane Bay presented a program on using sketchbooks and a few of our members brought some to share. And you know what I failed to do? Get photos of the inside of the books with sketches, notations, thoughts, paintings, color studies and ideas. I'm sorry!
