Great role models from our surgical team!
Congratulations to Drs. David Spain, Ioana Baiu, Carlie Arbaugh and their entire OR team on winning the October 2020 Patient Star Award from SHC!
"In this situation, the team was able to recognize and manage a very rare complication during surgery, and it was a great example of the teamwork present at SHC," said Mia Singh, a patient safety consultant at SHC.
According to Dr. Sarah Goldhbaer-Fieber, who presented the award, the anesthesia resident noticed disturbing vital signs during a routine appendectomy indicating the patient was experiencing malignant hyperthermia. The team acted swiftly and the patient's life was saved.
"The Patient Safety Star Award is presented to individual(s) who are nominated by their colleagues for being proactive and directly contributing to the safety of our patients here at Stanford Health Care. The nominations are then voted on by our leadership panel, and a winner is identified," said Singh.
The team was nominated for the award by Dr. Karen Frush, a clinical professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine.
Chief Resident Dr. Jared Forrester spent his professional development years developing a system to reduce surgical site infections in Ethiopia. Early results of the program (now dubbed Clean Cut) were recently published in the British Journal of Surgery.

"Dr. Baiu is not only a skilled surgeon and productive scholar but also a thoughtful and generous teacher who cares for her patients, students and colleagues. More importantly, she turns caring and teaching into tangible actions to help them,” said General Surgery Residency Program Director Dr. David Spain.
Baiu is a chief resident in the Division of General Surgery. She received the Arnold P. Gold Foundation's Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award from Stanford's School of Medicine in 2018 and elected into the AOA in 2020.

Congratulations Dr. Jeff Jopling!
Dr. Jeff Jopling has been selected as one of the recipients of the 2019-20 Arnold P. Gold "Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award." 👏👏👏
The Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award recognizes outstanding humanistic teaching residents as identified by our clinical medical students based on their exceptional teaching skills and commitment to the compassionate treatment of patients and families, students, and colleagues.
One student wrote:
"Dr. Jopling is one of the most inspiring physicians I've ever met, and one of the best educators. His way of advising, comforting, supporting, and informing his patients serves as a model of exactly how I'd like to communicate with patients one day. He is an incredible role model in many ways, but one of the more surprising ways is that he demonstrates how to be an adaptable learner. As a resident, he takes criticism with an extremely positive attitude, and adapts to feedback in real-time, which is something most med students and residents aspire toward."
Congratulations!!!
