People turn their backs on the church when the church turns their back on them.

If you make the commitment to follow Jesus but actively promote hate and judgement for personal gain then who are you really following?

The entirety of Jesus’s existence was rooted in loving God and loving others. It was never meant to be as complicated as we’ve made it.

So if you’ve chosen to be a follower of Jesus, what are you doing to uphold his message? What are you doing to love others in this moment?
What do you think Jesus would TRULY say about you?

I’ve been blessed to be a part of a number of inclusive affirming church communities who advocate for Social Justice….but I know so many who haven’t.

Sometimes in order to fully follow Jesus, we have to make the decision to leave the church.

I told myself I wouldn’t release any new music unless it was something that needed to be said. Something that so clearly expressed my beliefs so that the message would leave no one questioning where I stood and what I stand for.

I remember I was on a walk a couple months ago, listening to music from the 90’s and early 2000’s ( because let’s be honest that music still hits) and I was reminded of the song “One of Us” by . It’s a brilliant song. It’s a song that needs to be heard more. Upon listening to it I immediately had the thought that I wanted to write a different version of that song. A modern one. One that calls out hypocrisy and the way that Jesus is used today. Used being the operative word.

I soon after started writing lyrics and a melody that came all too easily to me but I knew I wanted the music to be something different. Something a little dark. I text my friend who I’ve been working with for years and told him my idea and that I’d love for him to write it with me. And while Ian doesn’t have the same spiritual beliefs that I do, we share similar values and morals. We share the same feelings in regards to religion and how conservative Christianity as a whole functions. He was the right person to collaborate with.

Within a few days he sent me a guitar part that fit perfectly with what I had already written. That’s when I knew this song was meant to be. He gave me some additional lyric ideas to add to what I had already written and the song that was created is something I could not be more proud of.

After the song was written I knew the missing piece was . Once she produced the track, I just had a feeling. And when I tell you that you need to get ready for this song, I mean it.

My faith in God and my belief in what Jesus stood for is apparent in everything that I do. And I truly hope every lyric in this song, every chord, every moment makes you think.
