Door of Hope
Empowering families facing homelessness to transform their lives
Team Spirit in Action! 🌟 From puzzling our way out of escape rooms to sharing laughs over lunch, our departments enjoyed a fantastic day bonding and building stronger connections. Cheers to creating teams that cohesively work together, and have a blast along the way!
Each month, our spiritual director shares a scripture for us to meditate on as we gather for staff meetings and connect with our prayer partners. Let us celebrate the 4th by praying for our families at Door of Hope, our dedicated staff, and the leaders of our country. 🙏❤️🤍💙
No child should be homeless. Yet, LA faces a crisis with children living in temporary shelters, cars, or on the streets.
The LA Times reports that 100 families live on Skid Row, with nearly 3,500 homeless families countywide. Local organizations are crucial in filling service gaps.
That’s why we're scaling up our Homelessness Prevention Program to help more families than ever before, and opening our 5th transitional shelter in early 2026 to help 20 more families.
We invite you to join us to empower families facing homelessness to transform their lives.
In case you missed it, there's still time to support our Job & Career Development Program for families facing homelessness. Help us reach our $150,000 MATCH CHALLENGE—only $34,598 to go! ⭐️ The deadline has been extended to May 31.

Gathering memories from our Door of Hope staff retreat at Mater Dolorosa Retreat Center. From spirited co****le competitions to scenic hikes, we found joy in each other's company. Grateful to our talented staff who lead us in worship, and to Pastor Josh Swanson from Christ Church in Sierra Madre for guiding us in meaningful connection with God through silence and solitude.

Samantha was living in her car with her young daughter, and a baby on the way. She moved into Door of Hope where she devised a plan with her case managers and enrolled in school.

Shoutout to our amazing childcare volunteer Matteo, who hosted a bake sale at his high school, Flintridge Preparatory, to benefit Door of Hope! We love this community!
As we celebrate Black History Month, we would like to share a piece of our history that you might not know. Back in 1985, a community leader named John Perkins (left) and a Pasadena native named Steve Lazarian (right) were heartbroken by the poverty, violence, and injustice they saw in Pasadena. They decided to host “Listening Conferences” in Northwest Pasadena, eager to hear the community’s needs and wants. After some weeks of meeting, listening, and learning, they took action. Lazarian hoped to partner with families living in poverty and founded Door of Hope; Perkins hoped to respond to the cycle of violence he saw playing out in NW Pasadena and founded Harambee Ministries. Both Lazarian and Perkins responded to the needs of the community in unique ways, and Door of Hope and Harambee are still on mission to serve the community today. We honor Perkins’ legacy, and the friendship and courage that led to the founding of these two organizations.
Last week, we were so honored to give the fabulous 2nd grade class of Clairbourn School a tour of Door of Hope’s Villa shelter!
We owe every student a massive thanks. The class organized a pocket change drive, and as a result of their efforts, Door of Hope was awarded with a $5,000 check! More than anything, we continue to be impressed by the minds and hearts of young students. What a gift to see a passion for service and community in the younger generation!
Door of Hope honors the tremendous efforts of Martin Luther King Jr. and all activists and advocates who have moved the needle in establishing justice for African Americans. We celebrate his legacy today and every day. May we continue to inspire change, promote equality, and build communities where justice and compassion prevail. For more resources on the impact of race/racism upon homelessness, click the link in our bio.
Thank you, LA County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, for your continued partnership with Door of Hope! Today, we were presented with a $150,000 check, which will support our services for mothers and their children who have survived domestic violence. Your contribution will go far, providing shelter, case management, therapy, and other transformative services for these families. Click the link in our bio to learn more about the impact of this gift!
Shoutout to Leni, a generous volunteer who decided to be a birthday angel for ALL 8 January birthdays! Not only did she provide gifts and cards, but she even made gift bags for each child full of party supplies for their birthday celebrations! What a gift!!
Every year, volunteers all over LA County spend one evening and the following morning to conduct the annual homeless count. Also called the Point-in-Time Count, Pasadena’s Homeless Count is a one-night snapshot of people experiencing sheltered and unsheltered homelessness that is reported to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) annually during the last ten days of January. The data derived from the Homeless Count is very important. Service providers like Door of Hope pay attention to these numbers, as they inform our programs. If you would like to volunteer, you can! Go to https://pasadenapartnership.org/volunteer-homeless-count/ to learn more!
Thank you to the Prism life group of Epicenter Church for putting together care packages and words of encouragement for families in the Homelessness Prevention Program!
From one of the cards written to families:
“The job of being a mother (or father) is not always the most recognized. Even though you probably don’t hear it often or enough, you matter. Your work matters a lot. Your words, sacrifice, dedication, and presence are significant. May you feel the love of God this Christmas. And always remember that you are appreciated. Blessings to you and all your children this 2024!”
Consider making a transformative gift TODAY and see its impact DOUBLE! Give at Doorofhope.us/donate
