#6 THE BYRDS - Probably THE most covered song of the Byrds entire catalog is this masterpice of folk-rock written by GENE CLARK, who gets my vote as the most important and creative member of the original line-up. Plus he was by far the coolest looking and if I had had my druthers, I'd rather have looked and sounded like Gene Clark than anyone else of the day. The original GONN prided ourselves on being able to play and sing their material, with 3 lead singers in the band, once we actually figured out how to play the right chords!!!! I believe it was 1987 when the unauthorized Byrds featuring Gene Clark & Michael Clark played an oldies show at the Poria Civic Center. I guess I wasn't aware they were in the band, so I didn't go. The next morning, arriving at my shop at about 10:15, my friend from the oil change place next door came in asking me "where have you been?" I said "well I'm here now, why?" He said "GENE CLARK has been here knocking on your door and waiting around for about twenty minutes! He finally left." This was when my jaw and my heart hit the floor simultaneously, and have never really recovered. This song has famously been pafrt of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers sets off and on since the beginning.

Perhaps you haven't heard the new Deep Purple album with new guitarist Simon McBride? I like it a lot, I do wish Ian would - just on one song - really go for a note, but as it is his voice sounds great, just a bit subdued as on some of the "cooler" early Purple things. The album is certainly something for the band to be proud of, Ian Paice, Ian Gillan and Roger Glover still very much with it. Don Airey is about as established as it's possible to get, with the Who, Deep Purple, Ozzy, and just about everyone that matters over decades. McBride is well up to the task of joining this group of living legends.

Everybody seems to be doing their "Top Ten (or Twenty) of this or that.... I named my shop after one of my Top 3 favorite albums of all time, and for the FORTIETH ANNIVERSARY of Younger Than Yesterday the record shop I'm going to post my TOP TWENTY Byrds songs, in no particular order, which of course MUST begin with tracks from that album, favorites of which abound. At a 90's Desert Rose band show at the Heart Of Illinois Fair, during a lull when Chris Hillman was conversing with the audience, I shouted this out as "request". As far as we know this "Presto Shade" car window screen was an exclusive bonus to the VIP pass at Summer Camp only when Billy played it, and/or that year's tour VIP. At any rate it's the only one we've ever seen and it came from one of the primary staff at Summer Camp. Jay ( pictured) also worked that show and he never saw it either. Don and I are back from Ridgedale where we had the most amazing Sunday ever, spent with The Rolling Stones, Samantha Fish, 20,000 of our closest friends (at least one not so much, wait for the styory) and two Uber drivers who took care of us above and beyond, especially one who must have been sent by a guardian angel. We have tons of great pix and videos and some once in a liftetime tales to tell. All coming later. Right now I'm back at work alfready, while absorbing the amazing things we've just experienced. Thanks to our friend Wes Meuth for making it possible for Don to accompany me on this fabulous adventure.

In conversation at the shop today the subject of this song came up and I had to check it out. Honestly when Sinead was first on the scene she had a habit of creating really negative publicity and putting people off, myself included, but I always loved her voice, and the music I heard without her antics accompanying it. Regardless, this performance blows me away. What makes it even more special is the participation by Garth Hudson, (still alive at 87), Rick Danko and Levon Helm (both deceased). Now that I know a lot more about Sinead I find this very sentimental and sad on her part, while being a fabulous interpretation. I do wish she had been a happier girl. RIP.

SO FAR I am still going to Ridgedale, Mo, Natures Arena on 7/21 by myself. I'm taking Marina's Prius so I have room for four, but would be happy to have just one. Some of the tickets have come down just a bit but most are pretty constant. I am a fan boy in PIT A. Next up for Marina and I, we'll be going to see AMERICA next Friday. I love the vast majority of their music, some of their LP's like "Homecoming" and "Hearts" really stuck with me, not to mention "Holiday" with "Tin man" etc, which George Martin produced,, beginning 7 consecutive albums he prodiuced for them. There's one song that really stuck with me. In 1984 I had business to do with Greg Shaw in Los Angeles, and my friend Larry Wigand, who lived in Ventura, invited me to stay with them, and in fact he loaned me his car to make my meetings during the day, while he worked at a Tape Duplication operation in the heart of LA. On the way back to Larry's more than once I heard this song on the radio, while driving back to Ventura, thus on that highway, with the California sun shining in a blue California sky, It was an unexpected feeling somehow of 'freedom', propelled by the song, not to mention the suroundings. So every time I hear this, I am reminded of that trip, which ended up in the literal re-launching of my 60's band GONN on Greg's Bomp label, and, Paula Pierce, Melanie Vammen and Julie Patchouli from the Pandoras, Julie & Mel who remain friends to this day, and Suzie Shaw whom I recently was back in touch with, and my friend Larry and his generosity and friendship that goes back even further, to 1976. So this song is for all of you then and now. It still touches my heart with happy memories of you.

Here's a pic with our VIP group at the Civic Center 7/5 with all members of Brit Floyd. Marina in bright blue Pink Floyd shirt standing next to Damian Darlington, and I'm next to Marina. Ian Cattell, bassist from Brit Floyd, came out on stage at one point late in the show with a camera and took a crowd pic that shows you how much Peoria loved and anticipated their arrival. Marina and I are right behind the two guys in white & blue tshirts in 2nd or 3rd row center. The response to the show was wonderful. Oh yes, they'll be back! Maybe the arena? Wouldn't that be something?

Marina and I are going to see BRIT FLOYD tonight at the Peoria Civic Center. We saw the leader/guitarist when he was the mainstay of "Australian Pink Floyd" at the Rosemont Theatre in 2011. last October we saw his new line-up, BRIT FLOYD, at the Chicago Theatre and once again were totally blown away.

For those of you who thought I really only treated to Marina to dinner at Dunkin' Donuts before the Rolling Stones at Soldier Field, (as opposed to those pictures being a part of a joke WE played on all of you!) maybe I'll regain my status since I bought VIP tickets for tonight so Marina can finally meet Damien and express her admiration for the decades he has invested in the music of Pink Floyd, including playing for David Gilmour's 50th birthday party and 3 nights at the Royal Albert Hall with Gilmour's blessing and the "Division Bell" stage set!!!!

Sixty years ago this month, and soon thereafter Chicago for the first time.

By the time this aired in 1965 I was already Stones/Beatles/DC5 obsessed totally and never missed a milisecond of them on Ed Sullivan. This was their first really big self-written hit and the record is so deep and eerie sounding. As much as "Please Please Me" had relatively blown the doors off in 1963, "The Last Time" really took the entire scene forevermore into a very different direction. This video is fabulous but you need to hear the RECORD!
