Every Birthworker should be adequately trained in providing emergent transitional care to EVERY PATIENT, EVERYTIME‼️ While a planned birth outside of a hospital (home, birthing center) is generally accepted as a safe alternative to hospital birth, at times transfer to the hospital becomes necessary. A recent review of the literature found that the rate of transfers from birth centers was between 11.6 and 37.4% (Alliman and Phillippi 2016). Data analysis by the Midwives Alliance of North America (MANA) Statistics Project determined that almost 11% of women needed the additional care of a hospital (Cheyney et al. 2014). Fortunately, most hospital transfers are for non-emergency reasons, such as failure to progress or pain relief, but some are emergent situations needing immediate care in the hospital setting. Both cases need a Birth Transition Action Plan for sure‼️

When the need for hospital transfer arises, it is important to have a plan and open communication. The safety of birth in the home or at a birth center when problems arise, relies on integrated maternity care systems where midwives/doulas and other Birthworkers can develop collaborative relationships with hospitals and their care providers. As hospitalist, nurse-midwives, and Healthcare staff who assume the care of women transferring from a home or birth center to our hospitals, we would like to share some of our thoughts on how we can all contribute to making this transition as smooth as possible for all involved, especially Mommy & Newborn!🌻

Can Women safely deliver At HOME? Sure they can! ...and be a high-risk Pregnancy, Too‼️ But... are there cases in which the emergent transition of Mom & Fetus to the Hospital must happen, in order for a safe delivery to occur? Yes there are‼️ And this is why every delivery Provider should indeed discuss these instances, and what is to happen should they occur with each Patient they serve. HOSPITAL PATIENTS, Too. (Take the 1 day training that includes the plan to find out why)

A transition action plan is not as simple as it sounds, and every Birthworker offering a variety of services including at home birthing services, should discuss these circumstances in depth with Patients. The things that should be included, Skills, and more! is all wrapped up in this Birth Transition Training that comes with the Action Plan download on July 9th at 10am. ...and if you're a Birthworker of any sort, YOU SHOULD BE REGISTERING NOW‼️🌻
