FACTS 8th grader, Lucia W., shared this message with the school on Black Heritage Day.
This is a quote from Sonya Renee Taylor:
When we say we don't see color, what we are truly saying is, “I don't want to see the things about you that are different because society has told me they are dangerous or undesirable. Ignoring differences does not change society; nor does it change the experiences non-normative bodies must navigate to survive.
Sonya Renee Taylor is a New York Times best selling author of the book "The Body Is Not An Apology" and a world renowned activist on racial justice, body liberation, and an advocate for joy. I choose her as my example today because she teaches us that racism, misogyny, and homophobia harm actual bodies and so honoring and acknowledging and celebrating bodies exactly as they are is a powerful act of resistance.
Even as kids and adolescence we can follow her example by celebrating all parts of our bodies and lives.
Whether your hair is black, brown or pink, celebrate your body.
Whether you are tiny, large, or somewhere in between, celebrate your body.
Whether your skin is rough, smooth or oily, celebrate your body.
Whether your hair is straight, curly, or somewhere in between
No matter your strength or physical ability, celebrate your body.
No matter the amount of scars, freckles, birthmarks, moles you have, celebrate your body.
Whatever shape your thighs, stomach, lips, nose, eyes, feet, ears, arms, legs, celebrate your body.
Thank you so much for letting me speak today and I encourage you to look her up and see all of her videos because she is so powerful.
Congratulations to the members of Let's Dance and Teacher Daisy and Teacher Rachel for a wonderful performance at Fringe Arts. Thank you to Philadelphia Ballet and Delphi Project Foundation for opportunities to youths across Philadelphia to create, dance and move.
