Why does this song still have such a hold on the world? Beethoven's Ode To Joy had an aspirational vision of unity and peace that were based on Enlightenment ideals like trust in reason, democracy and quality - a timeless and timely message.
Why We Still Want to Hear the ‘Ode to Joy,’ 200 Years Later Beethoven’s aspirational vision of unity and peace can be applied to virtually any situation or place. The music makes sure of that.
Student Recitals - Sunday, June 9th!
3 upcoming gigs - Rich Rudin, piano
I am devastated that the only sound for this recording is before the concert actually started. We were aware that there was a video problem after Byron performed, so we switched phones and livestreamed the rest of the concert in a separate video. That one has sound! So, just like last year you can see & hear only the last performances. I'm very sorry about that. - Rich Rudin
We hope you can join us for this exciting & inspiring concert featuring our wonderful faculty playing a mix of jazz and classical music. If you can't be there in person, enjoy the concert via our FaceBook livestream (which will be kept up on our page after the concert for future viewing)
Tickets are not necessary but, if you can, please do let us know if you plan to attend. Donations to our scholarship fund (encouraged, but not required) will be gratefully accepted before or at the concert. Checks may be made out to "Debbie Syzdek Scholarship Fund" or you may make your donations by phone. Contributions are NOT tax deductible. However, 100% of the money raised will be used for children who wouldn't otherwise be able to take music lessons.
Food for the reception will again be generously & deliciously provided by Le Bus (as it has been each year!)
I invite you to join me & my good friend, Paul Butler (on clarinet) Saturday, 3/23 at Le Bus in East Falls. We’ll play some of my original jazz compositions and also standards. There's always a warm atmosphere. Relax & enjoy delicious comfort food and cool music!

Night of Lights is a distinctive evening event that brings thousands to Chestnut Hill to experience Chestnut Hill Conservancy’s innovative public art streetscape exhibition.
On Friday, October 6, following the opening ceremony at 6:45, kickoff festivities will include storytellers at each themed projection window, music from various local acts, including performances by Maplewood Music Studio teachers Rich Rudin, Larry Cohen, Jocko MacNelly, Bill Davis and Ralph Salerno.
From Friday, October 6 through Saturday October 14, educational content and historical images from the Conservancy’s archives are projected through eight storefront windows along the Avenue.
Each evening the neighboring historic buildings along the Avenue are illuminated with theatrical lights from 7:00 – 9:00 PM. Night of Lights is more than an architecture and Archives evening exhibition; it is a celebration of Chestnut Hill’s main street, the vibrant spirit of its residents, and the thriving business community that contributes to its undeniable charm.

A link between children learning how to play a musical instrument and improved thinking in later life is backed by a new study, a collaboration between researchers in the fields of psychology and music and published in a journal, yes indeed, Psychology and Aging. The take-home point; "We see these results as an exciting starting point for further investigation into how musical experience from across the life course might contribute to healthy ageing."
Study backs link between music and cognitive ability People who had played an instrument did slightly better in cognitive ability tests than those who had not.

Faculty Concert - 4/23/23 (second half)
Apologies to all to tried to watch & listen to the livestream of our faculty concert on 4/23. We are incredibly sorry that we had a technical glitch & did not even realize it until half the concert was over. We deleted the video of those performances. We did fix the problem for the 2nd half of the program & that livestream is presented here (with the right side up, though it wasn’t at first).
Performances in this video: Bill, David, Jocko & Russ playing Kenny Barron’s “Sunshower” - Bill, Rich, Larry & Russ playing Kenny Garrett’s “Sing A Song Of Song” - Ralph playing Flight of the Bumblebee - Paul, Rich, Larry & Russ playing “Wayne” by Paul & Rich - Paul, Rich, Jocko & special guest Butch Reed (who taught at Maplewood for many years) playing “Let’s Fall in Love”.
Performances we wish we could share: Cynthia & Rich playing Bach - Cynthia playing Granados - David & Jocko playing “Vou Vivendo” - Larry playing an original - Rich, David, Jocko & Russ playing Rich’s “Take it Slow” - Rachel Cama playing Bach. VERY disappointing that there was no sound!

swing - it's subtle sure yet you CAN feel it
What makes that song swing? At last, physicists unravel a jazz mystery For nearly a century, jazz musicians have debated what gives songs that propulsive, groovy feel that makes you want to move with the music. The secret may lie in subtle nuances in a soloist's timing.

We teach All Kinds of Music here at our studios but there is, of course, something special about jazz. Besides the 'blue notes', syncopation, swing features you know, it's also crucially about individual freedom of expression. With roots in African-American collective polyphonic improvisation, that individual freedom is expressed within a collective that embraces diversity of expression. Okay, pretty much an American invention - how does that 'work' in China? Check out "Jazz In China" this saturday. It's the 2022 Free Speech Award Winner selected by American INSIGHT.
2022 Free Speech Award Ceremony 10th Anniversary of American INSIGHT's global Free Speech Award, plus the life and legacy of Benjamin Chew, Esq
How does this experimental instrumentation and selected piece land on you? Hearing it I'm sent on a most relaxing ride - smiling
