Thanks to everyone who made the Bala Summer Bash last night so special—especially our members, who helped create such a fun, vibrant atmosphere as we celebrated a fantastic summer season here at Bala. Jeff Nocella won the 2022 Men’s Club Championship, with Andrew Richardson taking the honors in the Men’s A Flight.

We remain open however we will be restricted to only driving on the cart paths today because it’s extremely wet.

I’m glad to report that new drainage that was recently installed on holes 12 and 13 have kept damage to a minimum!

At the 1952 U.S. Women’s Open Louise Suggs gave one of the premier performances of her Hall-of-Fame career.

The setting was our course here at Bala Golf Club and the Women’s Open was being played for just the seventh time. The championship was conducted by the LPGA, which had been founded just two years earlier.

The course was extraordinarily short, even by the standards of the day, playing to just 5,460 yards with a par of 69. Suggs pointed out that the course conditions of that era required resourceful shotmaking because of tight proximities. I think this photograph exemplifies that sentiment.

She would return to the area the following year to win an LPGA stop at Whitemarsh Valley Country Club and Philadelphia would become one of her favorite stops on tour.

This position is very important to Bala Golf Club as you will be the first to greet members and their guest(s). A lasting first impression is key.

Essential Responsibilities:

Outside operations will include but are not limited to:

Taking care of members and their guest(s) in a friendly manner

Setting up and maintaining range and cart fleet

Maintaining bag and cart storage

Prepare carts for play; assist guests with clubs and with outings

Support daily golf operations as directed by the head golf professional

Assist the golf shop staff daily

Responsible for appearance and cleanliness in and around the golf shop areas

Must be available to work weekends and holidays

Must be available 25-35 hours per week

$9.00 - $10.00 per hour plus gratuities

Meals provided while on duty

The roots of Bala Golf Club reach back to the spring of 1893. In 1923, noted designer William Flynn was brought in to renovate the course, building an additional nine holes. So then, ‘twas etched in wood that one day a set of steps would lead up from 8 green to 9 tee. You may have noticed that Flynn’s vision has finally been realized 😉

Here is a sneak peek of the bar and grill renovation progress. Things are starting to take shape! Giant windows overlook 18 green (and what will be the new covered patio and terrace). “U” shaped bar and tap system will be at the back of the room where the purple wall is.

You may have noticed some brown patches appearing in the fairways over the last few weeks. Normally our plant protectant program keeps theses areas in check, but we have noticed them getting worse even after a fungicide application. I reached out to Steve McDonald from Turfgrass Disease Solutions for help in diagnosing the patches. Steve made a visit to the Club and diagnosed the grass in these patches as having Leptosphaerulina leaf spot....

Objective

The Sous Chef is responsible for planning and directing food preparation in the kitchen, under the direction of the Executive Chef.

Essential Functions

• Monitor and ensure that standard kitchen operating procedures are met

• Responsible for food costs and labor costs

• Work with the Executive Chef on developing new menu items

• Oversee the line during service while monitoring cooks progress and flow of service

• Support and manage prep for service; ensure all prep items and recipes are made to standard

• Supervises hourly back of house staff and fills a role on the line or expo as needed

• Manage inventory and costs with the Executive Chef

• Manage prep and ex*****on of a Banquet Event Order for private functions

• Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements

• Culinary Arts Degree preferred

• 3+ years of kitchen management

• Prior experience in menu creation and training

• Excellent written and verbal communication and problem-solving skills

• Must be able to work flexible hours and days including weekends and Holidays

Bala Golf Club, Philadelphia, is looking for reliable, motivated, hard-working individuals to join our grounds crew. Responsibilities include but are not limited to mowing, trimming, blowing, watering, raking and all aspects of golf course manicuring.

The full-time positions available offer seasonal employment (March/April-November/December) and are 40 hrs a week plus every other weekend. Overtime available. Normal hours are 6:00 am – 2:30 pm M-F and 5:30 am – 9:30 am on weekends.

The position requires physical activity, and candidates need to be capable of operating small equipment and working outside in all types of weather, be self-motivated along with the ability to positively interact with other department associates, club members and their guest. Knowledge of the game and or previous experience is desired. Must be 18 or older with valid driver’s license.

Benefits include, lunch, uniforms, golf, direct deposit, competitive salary and paid time off. Productive, detail-oriented employees are offered employment the following spring.
