As we cheer on Thelma and Kahleah in the 2024 games, did you know the first Girardian to compete in the Olympics was in the 1928 Amsterdam games? George Healis, class of June 1924, won a silver medal as a rower in the men's coxless four, rowing for the Pennsylvania Barge Club. Rowing was not a sport at Girard at the time, but the school would launch its first crew club in 1998 and has recently restarted a rowing program.

When Kahleah Copper, who attended Girard College from first through 10th grade and is playing in her first Olympics as a member of Team USAโs womenโs basketball team, was asked about her background during a recent media interview, she didnโt miss the opportunity to share details about Stephen Girardโs life, which began in Bordeaux, France, and how he donated much of his wealth to found Girard College.
A Philadelphia Inquirer article highlights how Kahleah grew up playing basketball in her North Philadelphia neighborhood and eventually became a star player at Girard College, Prep Charter, and Rutgers University, and a four-time All-Star during her WNBA career.

Upon his death in 1831, Stephen Girard willed millions of his fortune into funding acts of public good, including the founding of the College. But what do we know about his charitable contributions while he was alive?
This summer, archival intern Madeline Koory has been painstakingly combing through Girard's account books to find out more. Her research so far suggests that the majority of Stephenโs donations (by number, not necessarily amount) were to individuals in need. Some of these people experienced great loss, such as John Lefay, a seaman who had his hands amputated in the winter of 1826 while at sea. Others experienced harrowing house fires, family deaths, sickness, and various hardships.
By diving into the records of Stephen Girard, stories of Philadelphians and their struggles in the early 19th century have surfaced. It seems that, despite his great wealth, Stephen Girard and his employees were in touch with the community and their needs.
The Bridge Educational Foundation, with support from Waste Management (WM), Malady & Wooten and Raymond James, is donating $293,000 of EITC and OSTC scholarships to schools in Philadelphia County in support of students. The Foundation hosted a check presentation event at Father Judge High School in Northeast Philadelphia.
Girard College is extremely grateful to the Bridge Educational Foundation for its advocacy and partnership, and to Waste Management and the other donors who make these contributions possible.

Happy 4th of July from the Historical Collections. This 1776 manual of pyrotechnics was part of Stephen Girard's library. In his catalog of Girard's books, William Zeil noted that "A section of this work deals with the use of fireworks at sea, and it may have been this part that interested Stephen Girard. Otherwise he had no known interest in the subject."

Business records are not the first place you would expect to find dramatic tales of runaway sailors, but Stephen Girardโs accounts sometimes contain just that. In 1807, James Robinson received his wages for three months and 17 daysโ work as a sailor aboard the Helvetius, minus the deductions taken out of his pay. The first few deductions were fairly standard, but then the captain of the ship, Ezra Bowen, wrote the following:
"For the following charges in consequence of his not going in time on board, being the cause of Capt. Bowen coming to town to get an other man, vis.:
passage of Capt. Bowen to come to Town - $2;
paid a constable to hunt for him - $1;
paid a ferry boat to take Cap. Bowen to Newcastle - $8.50;
paid by Capt. Bowen for a warrant - 25c;
passage of Capt. Bowen from Chester - $1.50;
supper for Capt. Bowen + boatman at Chester - $2"
Once a man had signed the shipโs articles, he could be arrested for failing to show up for the voyage โ Captain Bowen apparently did just that, and was angry enough about the trouble he had gone to to take all his expenses out of Robinsonโs wages. Robinson seems to have stayed on the ship after that โ he got another advance from the captain in Amsterdam.

Happy Juneteenth from Girard College!
While Philadelphia is called the cradle of liberty, Galveston, Texas has the distinction of being the city where Union troops arrived on June 19, 1865 with the news that the more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state were free. This day came to be known as Juneteenth and was made a federal holiday in 2021.

Opportunity Through Education
Girard College was formed by an unprecedented act of philanthropy by French immigrant and merchant, Stephen Girard. The heart of Girardโs intention remains a guiding principle for our community: to provide educational opportunity for under-served youth.
Mindful of our past, we are always building toward the future, promoting 21st-century skills and competencies and a growth mindset. We want our students to be curious, to take academic risks, to find their strengths, to collaborate and commune with others, and to be lifelong learners and active citizens. Importantly, Girard College nurtures and develops students to contribute to the world around them and to live lives of social impact.
