The birth of the Blessed Mother is not recorded in the Bible. Traditionally, at least since the 6th century, the Catholic Church celebrates the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary on its traditional fixed date of Sept. 8, nine months after the Dec. 8 celebration of her Immaculate Conception as the child of Saints Joachim and Anne. This celebration is an important event in the liturgical calendar, marking a moment of joy and hope around the world. The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is seen as a precursor to the coming of Jesus Christ, her son, who is central to the faith.

During the French Revolution, priests and religions were required to sign the constitutional civil oath of loyalty to the new revolutionary government. Many refused and fled France. Brother Solomon, as secretary to the Brothers’ Superior, remained in Paris. He was arrested in August 1792 and martyred on Sept. 2. He was the first martyr of the Brother’s Institute. Some days before his death he wrote the following words to one of his sisters: “Let us endure with joy and thanksgiving the crosses and afflictions that he will send us. As for myself, I am not worthy to suffer for him, for I have not yet encountered any problems, and yet there are so many others who are suffering.” He was canonized by Pope Francis on Oct. 16, 2017.
