Just as nature is getting ready to blossom, our bodies are also moving through a significant transition from our quieter winter routines into a more spring-like, outward expression of our energy.

Thanks to Elizabeth Campbell for her inspiration this month! Stay tuned on Facebook as we ponder the hope of renewal. Elizabeth says,
"Every day I find myself amazed by the miracle of the world coming to life again. I say this fully knowing how cheesy this sounds. But gosh darn it if I am not smiling at a new flowering tree the next day.
Part of my joy and appreciation for this rebirth of nature is the hope that it brings. As I said before, I like the dark and cold of the winter. The juxtaposition of a warm fire and twinkling holiday lights reminds me that light is present even in the darkest of times. As a trauma therapist (and a human), I have seen so much darkness. You can become acclimated to it, even expect it. Something about this spring lit up the clarity inside me that as we hold space for and appreciate the darkness, we make room for all of the light to come in."

Guided, detailed writing can not only help us process what we’ve been through and assist us as we envision a path forward; it can lower our blood pressure, strengthen our immune systems, and increase our general well-being. Expressive writing can result in a reduction in stress, anxiety, and depression; improve our sleep and performance; and bring us greater focus and clarity.
Writing Can Help Us Heal from Trauma Why does a writing intervention work? While it may seem counterintuitive that writing about negative experiences has a positive effect, some have posited that narrating the story of a past negative event or an ongoing anxiety “frees up” cognitive resources. Research suggests that trauma damages ...

Writing is not just for writers!
Rachel Kobin shares, "Even if you think you’re not good at it, writing can enhance your life. As a human, you have the right to express yourself and tell your story. Your voice is unique, and that voice can be used privately as part of your self-care practice or shared to the extent you find rewarding."

Are there psychological benefits of writing?
"The deeper motive, from what I’ve seen, is that people write stories to make sense of their lives. They’re going in search of meaning."
Why we write Any stories that are good originate from the deepest precincts of our inner lives, from our obsessions and fears and desires, writes Steve Almond. We write about what we can’t get rid of by any other means.
"Writing is medicine. It is an appropriate antidote to injury. It is an appropriate companion for any difficult change."
— Julia Cameron
Enjoy this poetry from William Stafford titled "Keeping a Journal":
At night it was easy for me with my little candle
to sit late recording what happened that day. Sometimes
rain beating in from the dark would begin softly
across the roof and then drum wildly for attention.
The candle flame would hunger after each wafting
of air. My pen inscribed think shadows that leaned
forward and hurried their lines along the wall.
More important than what was recorded, these evenings
deepened my life: they framed every event
or thought and placed it with care by the others.
As time went on, that scribbled wall—even if
it stayed blank—became where everything
recognized itself and passed into meaning.

Stories are about change, and by reading and watching them we, ourselves, can change for the better. But people write for different reasons.

Last week on the day of the solar eclipse, several of us gathered at the bridge in Fort Washington State Park, steps from the office, so we could experience this beautiful phenomenon of nature. What a blessing to have the natural space available to us!
In the woods and standing above the creek, we joined with the birds, animals, and insects to witness the changes in light, temperature, and sound. Being together in community made this magical experience even more meaningful.
Thank you to the School District of Springfield Township for inviting us to participate in their annual Family Wellness Fair in March! We had a great time meeting families and sharing our services with the community.
