Tips for getting the most out of the group consultation experience
Group consultation is only as good as the cases that are being presented. So finding a case that is appropriate for exposure therapy is of paramount importance. We suggest that you begin thinking about potential cases as soon as you register for group consultation.

If you are unsure about the fit for exposure therapy for an individual, we can discuss any questions, concerns, or reservations you may have about your potential case in the first consultation group. It is therefore generally expected that everyone will have at least one or two individuals to present to the group as potential exposure therapy candidates.

Workshop Description:
Excessive perfectionism in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom has shown a steady increase in prevalence over the past five years and is related to negative health outcomes. Specifically, excessive striving for perfection is associated with feelings of failure, guilt, indecisiveness, procrastination, shame, low self-esteem, and deficits in emotion regulation. In treatment settings maladaptive perfectionism can be observed in patients seeking treatment for generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Given the deleterious effects of perfectionism, researchers have continued to explore the role this transdiagnostic and multifaceted trait plays in the phenomenology of psychopathology. In this webinar, Dr. Jeremy Tyler will discuss the assessment of maladaptive perfectionism and how it may contribute to the presentation of common anxiety and related disorders. Additionally, Dr. Tyler will provide suggestions for addressing excessive perfectionism within the context of providing CBT for anxiety and related disorders.

CTSA’s Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a clinical service for adult patients with moderate to severe OCD seeking a higher level of outpatient care delivered in a condensed timeframe. Our IOP centers around the delivery of Exposure and Response Prevention (ExRP), originally developed at the CTSA and the gold-standard treatment approach for OCD. The IOP is a daily treatment program delivered in a fully virtual format that consists of approximately 4 hours per day of treatment 5 days per week for 6 weeks. Treatment includes daily individual sessions with a licensed psychologist, exposure therapy with an individual therapist, and group therapy. For more info: https://www.med.upenn.edu/ctsa/IOP_for_OCD.html

The next round of our IOP is scheduled to start January 30, 2023.

Good news! Our first round of our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for OCD at the CTSA was a success, so we are launching another cycle, slated to begin October 31, 2022. Here's some info about the program:

· The IOP for OCD is for adults with OCD only

· The program runs 5 days per week for 6 weeks, during which we provide daily individual EX/RP, groups, and assisted exposures. Patients MUST be able to commit 4 hours a day (between 9am and 5pm) to the IOP for the duration of the program.

· The IOP for OCD is offered via telehealth only at this time.

· All potential participants MUST live in Pennsylvania or New Jersey (or must be willing to be physically present in Pennsylvania for the duration of the program).

· Our program is offered in-network for Quest insurance.

· For individuals with any other kind of insurance, the cost for treatment is entirely out-of-pocket. For those paying out-of-pocket, the cost for the IOP is $1,000 per day, which means the full cost of the treatment program will be $30,000.

· For those paying out-of-pocket who wish to seek reimbursement from their insurance carrier, they will be required to seek a pre-authorization before starting the treatment program.

· CTSA will be happy to work with patients to provide the necessary information the insurance company requires for pre-authorization. However, reimbursement for services is not guaranteed by CTSA as this decision is ultimately up to the insurance carrier.

If you are interested in our new program or just want more information, please contact our clinic assistant, Danielle Wylie at [email protected] and Assistant Professor and Director of IOP for OCD, Dr. Danielle Cooper at [email protected].

Date: Friday, June 3, 2022

Time: 12:30pm — 4:30pm EST

Cost: $250.00 per person

Location: Zoom webinar

Workshop Description:
Rates of intimate partner violence spiked by as much as 30 - 60% during the early stages of the COVID-19 lockdown orders. The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in new challenges for survivors of intimate partner violence as their options for leaving the home may be more limited compared to pre-pandemic resources. The increased reports of domestic violence coupled with increased rates of mental health diagnoses, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), necessitate consideration of strategies to optimize therapy for survivors of domestic violence who meet criteria for PTSD.

In this workshop, we discuss barriers to care among survivors of intimate partner violence. We will review guidelines for determining appropriateness for care for survivors of domestic violence. We will present core trauma-related cognitions that are often disrupted among survivors of domestic violence. In addition, we will discuss strategies to attempt to elicit such cognitions in processing to reduce PTSD symptoms. Special considerations around in vivo exposure practice will be discussed in detail, especially in relation to contact with the perpetrator of violence. Examples include a need to be in contact with the perpetrator because of shared custody arrangements or future court appearances. Lastly, we will discuss common points of intersection with the legal system when conducting psychotherapy with a survivor of intimate partner violence.

Neglecting to adapt Prolonged Exposure (PE) components to take cultural differences and discrimination-related traumas into account may decrease treatment success for clients belonging to marginalized groups. PE is a cognitive behavioral treatment for PTSD that has more empirical support and the most representative racial samples of any evidence-based treatment for PTSD. Yet, little attention has been paid to making culturally-informed adaptations of PE. In this workshop, Dr. Sandy Capaldi will review the basic components of PE and provide tips and insights on incorporating cultural considerations into every aspect of PE, from assessment through termination.

Time: 9:00am to 5:00pm EST

Cost: $450.00 per person

Location: Zoom (you will be sent an invitation with instructions prior to the workshop)

Workshop Description:
Cognitive-Behavior Therapy has been empirically shown to be the recommended therapy for Panic Disorder. Meta-analyses have found very large effect sizes with 50-70% of clients within normative functioning and 70-80% panic-free. Yet few clients receive this robust treatment.

This workshop will focus on the practical application of Cognitive-Behavior Therapy for Panic Disorder. In this webinar, attendees will learn to diagnose and assess panic disorder as well as the techniques that are effective in reducing (and even eliminating) the symptoms.

CE Learning Objectives
At the end of this workshop, participants should be able to:

Compare Panic Disorder vs. panic attacks from other disorders
Describe the Fight or Flight Response and its relationship to Panic Disorder
Explain how to monitor panic disorder symptoms to clients
Demonstrate how to counter Probability Overestimation
Demonstrate how to counter Catastrophizing
Design Interoceptive Exposures for Panic Disorder
Design In Vivo Exposures for Panic Disorder
