*SHELTER PLEA* NEW PHOTOS - Lilo is too timid to go on adventures with Stitch. Can you welcome her into your Ohana/family? Lilo is a 3- 4 years old domestic short hair being surrender due to persons allergies. What my friends at ACC say about me:

I am finding the shelter a bit overwhelming. Outside one-on-one I am a great big cuddle bug.

I am looking for a home with a patient person.

I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home.

I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe.

I would do best in a home with only adult humans. Hi there, my name is Lilo. I haven't had much experience with humans outside of my previous family, so I need time to learn to trust new people. The staff here did a great job bribing me with treats - squeeze ups are my favorite! I used to swat if anyone even came near me, but now I'll let the humans pet me on the head. I enjoy cheek rubs, but please keep them limited. I may nip if I feel uncomfortable or overwhelmed.

Hello, my name is Lilo. My animal id is #156134. I am a desexed female gray cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/23/2022, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- new baby.

Lilo is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. She is having a hard time adjusting to the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She hisses and growls, escalating to charges to the front and swatting during cleaning. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. We believe it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

*Update 12/04/22*

Lilo is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. It took her a long time to warm up to staff, but is displaying less defensive behaviors than she used to. She will still swat if approached too quickly, but will sit by the front and people watch. She is very receptive to treats and will now tolerate gentle petting if you go very slow and while she eats, but without treats she will sometimes grab the scratcher tool and bite with moderate pressure. She is showing continued improvement with more positive reinforcement, but we believe she would do much better in a calmer environment. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Subjective: BAR in feral den, hissing, swatting, growling; blood-tinged urine in feral den

Observed Behavior - Elected to sedate with 0.2ml zoletil IM

Evidence of Cruelty seen - None

Evidence of Trauma seen - None

Objective:
BCS 5/9

EENT: Eyes clear, ears clean, no nasal or ocular discharge noted
Oral Exam: Adult dentition with moderate staining & tartar on premolars
PLN: No enlargements noted
H/L: NSR, NMA, MM pink/moist, CRT < 2, lungs clear, eupneic
ABD: Non-painful, no masses palpated
U/G: Spayed female (tattoo seen)
MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, no masses noted, healthy hair coat
CNS: Mentation appropriate - no signs of neurologic abnormalities
Re**al: Externally clean
Wood's Lamp Exam: Not performed

Focused bladder ultrasound revealed very small urinary bladder, so difficult to assess wall thickness & presence of stones/debris

Assessment:
Hematuria- r/o FLUTD vs stones vs UTI vs other
Stage 2/4 dental disease
Otherwise apparently healthy

Prognosis: Good

Plan:
Monitor urination while in shelter
100mg gabapentin PO BID indefinitely while in shelter

Lilo was not handled. When we tried to transfer her from the cat bag to the carrier she started growling loudly, then staring hissing and when she had the opportunity tried to swat at us in various occasions. She was very angry, swat at me, Andrea and we had to get Pedro to help placing her in a dent. She tried to bite and scratch in multiple occasion. While being transfer to cat holding she was rocking back and forward in the dent growling loudly. Thamara C

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/02/22
Comes out from den to sniff around the front, but huffs, growls, and hisses when she sees me make any movements. I tried to take her dirty bowls from her kennel but she spits and will strike, creating a mess of dry food everywhere. I continued to go slow and she is very wary, sometimes looking into the den and contemplating hiding, but decides to stay out to "defend" her space. I eventually got everything out going slowly. She eats with haste and will look up at me, growling and huffing occasionally. LOVES chicken offered but is not open to touch.

11/3/22
Hiding in den, when I quickly reach close to close the side entrance, she hisses loudly and swats. I gently tidy up her kennel and make room for a double kennel and she lunges repeatedly. After setting her space up and feeding her, she curiously walks out to explore and eats. She quickly steps back and hisses loudly when pet on the head while eating. After she is done, she walks to the side kennel and lays down calmly.

11/5/22
In den when approached and when door was opened. Offered dry treats on scratcher close to the entrance of den. Hissed. Left dry treats nearby the entrance. Hissed a couple of times. Offered squeeze up on scratcher farther away from entrance of den. Waited. Came out of den, sniffed dry treats and ate squeeze up. Offered more squeeze up on scratcher. back in den. waited and came out to eat again. used hook to close the portal door, swatted and grabbed hook a couple of times. (needed to change litter box in connected kennel). swatted hook again when opening portal door. Waited and came out of den to eat squeeze up on scratcher again, back in den.

11/7/22
Lion pose with paws tucked facing front, somewhat large pupils, staring past me. Follows laser and watches treats being dropped in, sniffs the scratcher tool at some length, allows a little petting with it and then pulls back and gives a small hiss. Improving?

11/9/22
Resting on top of the den upon approach. Briefly allows pets with the scratcher tool but began to gently paw at it to stop from moving further against the back. While eating offered squeeze up treats she tolerated pets a bit longer but began to low grumble after a few strokes. Left alone to reduce stress.

11/11/22
Resting in the cage on approach. She was alert with soft eyes. While eating offered treats she briefly allowed pets along the head but quickly got up and hissed. Limited with interactions but treat motivated. Left some more offered treats for her enjoyment.

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: New home adjustment period,Pet-induced aggression,Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Lilo has improved during her stay. She initially displayed defensive aggression, but has slowly started to form a positive association with staff after offering tasty treats. She will now allow brief attention, but will still get over-aroused and nips with pressure, but then goes back to head-butts. Care should be used during interactions to monitor her body language and allow her initiate contact.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Lilo is a bold kitty who has warmed up a lot during her stay. She was very fearful at first and would display defensive aggression when petting was attempted, swatting and biting at the scratcher tool to avoid contact. Staff continued to work with her and offered treats and her body posture became more relaxed, but she is still wary of touch and quick to swipe or bite when she feels overwhelmed. She does allow some petting with the scratcher tool if you move very slowly, but she will occasionally tense up and bites hard on the tool, but will go back to head-butting and leaning in for cheek rubs. The assessor is careful to allow her to initiate contact but she still needs more work to become fully comfortable around new people.

Lilo is finally starting to feel more comfortable around staff. She will now accept brief pets using the scratcher tool, but is still quick to escalate to biting when she feel overwhelmed or uncomfortable. She appears to be more independent, and will need time to warm up to her new home and family. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
