The holiday season is a wonderful time of year, but all the festivities can be difficult for some children. Over the next week, I’ll share some ideas that might make your family’s holiday a little easier.
I often have a very romantic idea in my head of how I want the holiday to go (everyone is happy, the food is great, we sing songs, everyone loves their gifts—basically a Hallmark movie in my home). Reality doesn’t really look like that, and that is ok. Remember if your child doesn’t want to participate, it’s not a reflection of your parenting skills.
Just as it’s important to teach our children flexibility, we need to model it. And what better time than when we are celebrating love and peace to listen to our children and honor their individuality.

Children learn bodily autonomy at a young age, and honoring their comfort level with physical touch around family is always important. As a Mimi, I always want a hug from my grandkids, but the reality is, they don’t always want a hug from me—and that’s ok!! It’s more important that they know they are safe and that their boundaries will be respected.

The truth is, your child will understand you before they will speak to you. They are always learning when you are speaking to them. So even if your little one is a newborn, talk to them as much as you can. Talk, talk, talk!!

Basic concepts and functional language are BOTH important aspects of language development.
Let’s talk about basic concepts!! You might not even realize you model basic concepts in your language daily. Use of basic concepts in language helps both expressive and receptive language.

Concerned what speech therapy might look like for your toddler?
It will involve a lot of play! Therapy is most effective when it’s informed by the child.

Basic concepts and functional language are BOTH important aspects of language development. If you are worried that your child is struggling to communicate their needs or frustrated in social situations, it may be a good idea to start teaching more functional phrases. It might sound silly, but prompting your child to use these phrases can help them learn how and when to use them. You know your child and their life best, so only you will know the words/phrases that will help them communicate the most with others. Check out the last slide for some ideas.
Prompting your child to use functional language might look and sound like:
Your child is startled by a loud noise. You turn to your child and prompt, “That’s a garbage truck. It makes a loud noise. You can say, ‘I hear the truck’ or ‘the truck is loud’ or ‘I feel scared.’”
Looking for ways to help your little one develop language? It might be easier than you think, even during the holidays.
You can support language development anywhere! In this series we are discussing how to use everyday activities to utilize and expand language skills.
Are you planning to celebrate Thanksgiving? Celebrations like these can be a fantastic place to foster your little one’s language development! While preparing, ask your child to follow basic directions (toddlers love to help with age-appropriate tasks), model labeling or requesting food items during dinner, and encourage your child to interact with your friends and family (or model it yourself). There are so many good opportunities to work on social skills when you gather with your loved ones.
