This distinguished gentleman arrived on the farm today. At 76 years old, he has plenty of tales to tell and experience to share.
FarmSon plans to restore/rehabilitate him to at least middle-aged glory so he can help with the lighter tractor chores.

The freezers are loaded ready to go! See you at from 4pm to 7pm today!
Two days with rain in a row!
This might break the nascent drought. It will at the very least perk up the pastures and refill the cistern and pond.
And it provides an excellent excuse to skip chores.
Hot days mean cool meals.
And how cool is it that this evening’s dinner is entirely locally grown or made?

Woodland Farm will be sampling boneless pork chops at Fearrington Farmers' Market this Tuesday, June 25th from 4pm to 6pm.
Now that summer is officially here, it's time to fire up the grill. (It's too hot to cook inside!) Grilled whole or cut into pieces for skewers, our boneless pork chops are delicious with a simple marinade, your favorite barbeque sauce, or even just salt and pepper. Stop by and see how great they taste!
Make sure you get your favorite ground beef, burgers, steak, lamb chops, pork cuts, bacon, and sausages by pre-ordering before Tuesday at 10am for same-day market pick up. https://app.barn2door.com/woodlandfarmnc/all

Every year, without fail, the lambs crawl under the pasture fence and graze by the house.
I’m convinced they’re encouraged to do this by their mothers and older sisters in some sort of sheep hazing ritual.
I should probably do something about it, but they don’t go far and are quite polite about being herded back to where they belong.
Yum.
Are you ready?
Farm to Fork starts in less than an hour…

Obligatory cicada pictures.
We’ve been hearing cicadas in the woods that border the farm for a while, but oddly, not on the farm itself. Nor have we seen many.
That may be changing…
When you’re cute and you know it.

Truth.
Surprise! No rest for the shepherd.
Just like the famous covert agent, dear 007 was keeping a secret. She showed no signs of being pregnant.
The little ram had a rough and chilly start, so his outlook is guarded. But he’s had a meal and is warming up with mama under the lights.
Well hello there!
This little fellow was born a couple of days ago. He and his mom are hanging out in the barn getting to know one another.
(For those playing lamb bingo, he was born to ewe 003 on 2/28, exactly on her due date!)
Not all farm stories end with “and they lived happily ever after”.
Rest easy little one and know that you were loved.
So it begins.
And nothing has gone to plan. She’s dangerously hypothermic and her brother was stillborn.
Basic chores have been shoved aside or passed off (thank you, dearest FarmHusband). Pretty much all I’ve gotten done today is repeatedly warm a lamb with a bucket of water and a plastic bag and try to milk her mother. And I’m heading off to the large animal vet to get supplies.
These are the harsh realities of raising livestock. Behind all the cute pictures of babies are interrupted sleep, no sleep, fatigue, and worry. And if I said I wouldn’t change it for the world, I’d be lying. There are some very definite changes I’d make.
Little number 030 will teach me something to help another down the line. No matter what the outcome.
Best walk ever.
Courage and Ace, side by side without a care in the world. Getting to this point has been a long, slow road and a reminder that 1% improvement everyday adds up faster than you think.
