South Chestnut Farm
A small local sustainable farm with grass fed cattle, pasture raised pork and pasture raised eggs in Chatham County, NC.
I started South Chestnut Farm in Chatham County, NC, about 7 years ago on land that has been in my family for at least four generations. Inspired by stories of successful small farms from across the country, I envisioned an opportunity to manage a 60 acre cattle farm in a sustainable and environmentally-sound manner while producing farm products for local customers. Today, we place top priority on
In the spirit of the season, here's some "hickory Nutcrackers" of the 4 legged kind to keep you entertained!
Hope everyone has a great Christmas and holiday!
We have eggs! This is our latest group of free range, non-gmo fed, Animal Welfare Approved Rhode Island Red chickens, and they have started laying! If you're at the Holly Springs Farmers Market and need some eggs, come see us!
FYI: We will be absent from the Holly Springs Farmers Market this weekend (9/9/23), we will be back next weekend however.
Thanks to all and take care everyone !!
All, just to let you know, we will not be at the Holly Springs Farmers Market tomorrow (3/25). We will return next weekend,
Thanks!
FYI: We will have a good selection of grass-fed beef (including ground beef) at the Holly Springs Farmers Market tomorrow (5/21/22). I anticipate there being significant demand/interest so if you are interested it would be a good idea to shoot me a line (text is probably the most reliable) to let me know what you'd like.
Also, and without going into a long explanation wrt beef supply and what we can produce responsibly (including processing availability), we're going to have to place a limit of a max of 3 pounds of ground beef per purchase ...will probably keep this in place for the next several weeks while the season's harvest schedule ramps up.
And last but not least, you'll probably notice some price increase across the board. Obviously, every spect of production cost is relatively high right now and we've tried to maintain (for the most part) steady pricing up until now, but the wave has finally caught up and we have no choice but to react to keep the boat at least at water level.
All that being said, a genuine thanks to all our loyal customers ... hope to see you tomorrow,
Roger
Here's few farm photos for those interested.
Fall calves are coming, here's a photo of an Angus/Devon X not more than 8 hours old (ie still groggy enough to let me hold her head up for a photo). Normally the mothers are not too happy about this but the mother of this calf seems to trust me, however she was closely eyeing me.
The second photo is pretty obvious, some pigs on pasture happily looking for hickory nuts after we tossed about 3 pounds into their area.
The last photo is of a tractor and "no-till drill" planting annual ryegrass and clover into a filed of crabgrass-stuble. Planting with a no-till drill is a form of conservation tillage which requires only one pass with a tractor and allows planting with minimal soil disturbance. The goal and result is less chance of soil erosion and a net gain in CO2 sequestration.
We will be at the Holly Springs Farmers Market this weekend with a limited number of smoked ham roasts (in the 3 to 4 pound range). These are hams from our pasture raised, non-gmo pork and are smoked without the addition of artificial nitrates/nitrites. And as usual will will have plenty of other typical pork cuts including bacon and pre-cooked ready to eat BBQ, along with a full selection of grassfed beef.
Feel free to call/text (919-539-7468) or email if you'd like to pre-order anything and receive a 5% discount on your order.
Thanks all and hope to see this Saturday!
All, we are taking the weekend off and will not be at the farmers market (Holy Springs) this weekend(9/25). Will be back next weekend, see you then.
Thanks to all!

All, just a reminder that we will be at the Holly Springs Farmers Market this Saturday (5/8) from 8am until 12pm. We will have grassfed beef and pre-cooked pulled pork BBQ this week; however we're still waiting to get our recently harvested pork (conventional cuts) back from the processor ... doesn't appear that's going to happen in time for this weekend's market.
As a reminder, if there's something you'd like to preorder feel free to send me message here (facebook) or by text.
Hope to see everyone there and thanks.
Hello All,
Wanted to let everyone know that we will be at the Holly Springs Farmers Market tomorrow with grassfed beef and pasture raised/non-gmo pork.
That being said, here's a "FYI":
Its the time of year (just before this years harvest) when we are running low on some things. We have beef but its predominantly ground beef with a few steaks included; as for pork, we still have a decent variety of typical pork cuts but all are running somewhat low. With regard to beef, its always a little tricky this time of year (trying to keep supplies on hand) when the seasonable nature of grassfed beef becomes apparent. Why you may ask: we prefer not to harvest beef in the winter while most forages and pastures are dormant or growing slowly, if sticking strictly to and following grassfed certification rules and guidelines, those forage characteristics make it really hard to produce good beef.
And, one more thing: As we all are painfully aware, the covid-19 virus has thrown a "monkey-wrench" into many aspects of our daily lives as well as those of some businesses. I mention this because the inevitable "price increase" in our cost of production has been affected; one of the processors we use has had to increase their prices significantly ... they were very clear in their reasoning which had to do with the large increased cost of sanitation supplies, which I fully trust is the reality for them. Simultaneously the farm we buy non-gmo pig and layer feed from has also had a moderate price increase. You probably see where I'm going with this: since any business (farms are included here) has to maintain some profit to be able to sustain itself we will unfortunately have to raise prices a bit. I make this long-winded explanation because its genuinely not something I want to do and feel I owe some background reasoning. So, if you stop by to see us tomorrow at the farmers market, or sometime later, you will see some increase in our prices ... its not a decision we take lightly.
Thanks all,
Roger

Our Story
We started South Chestnut Farm in Chatham County, NC, about 7 years ago on land that has been in my family for at least four generations. Inspired by stories of successful small farms from across the country, we envisioned an opportunity to manage a 60 acre cattle farm in a sustainable and environmentally-sound manner while producing farm products for local customers.
Today, we place top priority on the health of our soil and grasses to produce eggs from pastured laying hens and 100% certified grass-fed beef from our small herd of Dexter cows. We use no growth hormones, no anti-biotics, no pesticides and no synthetic fertilizers on any of our land. We practice “managed rotational grazing” to ensure our pastures are never over grazed, are properly stocked and kept fertile by an ever-increasing amount of organic matter.
To place guidelines on ourselves and to earn the confidence of our customers, we have earned certification from Animal Welfare Approved ( www.animalwelfareapproved.us) for the humane treatment of our animals, along with grass-fed certification for our beef from A Greener World (https://animalwelfareapproved.us/consumers/certified-grassfed-by-agw/)
We are currently hosting sales at The Holly Springs Farmers Market (http://www.hollyspringsnc.us/319/Farmers-Market) Saturdays from 8:30 to 12:30. We do deliver to the Raleigh/Cary/Apex areas weekly and are glad to have folks come to the farm for purchases (or just to visit) ... just call first to make sure we will be around.
