With this award, AORN recognizes Wexford Hospital and Saint Vincent Hospital for their commitment to providing purposeful education with a focus on reducing risks of error- for all their surgical team members.

Meet another one of our wonderful AHN nursing leaders - Vice President of the Nursing Institute, Laura Griffin!

🔷 Laura, what attracted you to AHN?

10 years, 9 months, 6 days… and it feels like just yesterday!! When I was deciding where my career would take me, I knew that if I stayed in Pittsburgh there was only one health network where I wanted to work—AHN (West Penn Allegheny Health Systems at the time). Growing up in small town Ohio where there were significantly less options for healthcare and we had to travel 30+ minutes to receive care; I was impressed by AHN’s strategy to bring care to the communities that they serve rather than making them travel into the city. In addition, I recognized that AHN had passionate leaders who prioritized patient care and quality over everything else. I knew just months into my first role that this was a place that I wanted to grow my career; ten years later my passion for being a part of the AHN Leadership team has only grown stronger.

🔷 Is there a key skill that all leaders should possess in today’s environment?

Strategic Thinking / Planning skills. Even in the most basic form, leaders should possess the ability to think strategically about their operational areas. Every leader should have improvement goals and initiatives ongoing to drive future success of their departments. Too often in these difficult times, leaders are so busy managing the day to day chaos that they forget to develop a greater vision for their department. Strategic thinking/planning skills allow a leader to work beyond the day to day and unite their team members around a comprehensive departmental vision.

🔷 What's your favorite place to eat in Pittsburgh?

It’s so hard to choose that I must give 2;
Tako; they have the best Spicy Cucumber Margaritas for sipping and unique tacos that are some of the best in the city of Pittsburgh!
Willow; they have the best customer service in the Pittsburgh restaurant industry. When you walk in—you feel like family. Weekly specials, an excellent happy hour, and unique dishes.
