“Gagging is when a child opens their mouth and pushes their tongue outward to prevent an object from ‘going down the wrong tube,’ so to speak,” explains Dr. Donner. “They may turn bright red and make sputtering or retching noises. Gagging is the body's way of protecting the airway from choking. Let it happen naturally – there’s no need for intervention at this point.”

If the gagging or coughing noises stop, that’s a sign that the foreign object has become lodged in the child’s airway and that your little one is actively choking. “In this scenario, they are no longer able to pass any air in or out of the lungs, so they will often appear very panicked and unable to breathe,” says Dr. Donner.

Choking incidents aren't as uncommon as you might think – at least one child dies every five days from choking on food. That's why it’s a good idea to take a child-specific choking and CPR rescue maneuver class, so you’ll know how to respond in the event of an emergency, says Dr. Donner. Yesterday, I met many wonderful families. I had people happily run over to share they already have LifeVac at home, in their car, at their workplace, etc. They were excited to get some practice using the Choking Charlie mannequin and see how truly easy it is to use. Even their kids were eager to step up to the plate!

Being a fire safety event, naturally, I met a lot of 1st responders who found the LifeVac to be a "no-brainer." I spoke at length with one man who explained their current process and equipment, or lack-there-of, and agreed this is a very inexpensive device that would be helpful to have on hand; especially considering the EMS shortages all over the county.

Finally, I met a local State Representative and personally asked her to support HB2673. 🙌 Progress, no matter how small, is progress!

Mason made a quick appearance, but was unnapped and as you can see VERY grumpy. 😂

This donation went to a local daycare. Between safety measures, trained staff and now this tool being available... those children are a little safer while away from their parents.

When your child begins to gag it is important NOT to intervene unless they truly begin to choke.

If they are silent and/or turning blue you need to call 911 and begin Basic Life Support ASAP. If that doesn't work after several attempts, and help hasn't arrived, grab the LifeVac.



This past weekend Mason got ahold of a tortilla chip at a party. We were unaware it was in his mouth as he ran around the venue.

He stopped running and began to gag. I watched for signs of needing to intervene, but luckily his gag reflux caused him to throw up pushing it out. I can only assume the chip got wet and soggy in his mouth and got stuck causing him to gag.

Within minutes he was back to himself running around.

These are my children. My WHY. Why I spread awareness for choking accidents, prevention and lifesaving measures.

Our family is healthy, happy and WHOLE. 🙌 Today when my son awoke from his nap my daughter went in to either entertain or annoy him. (It's always a coin-toss) LOL. But, when I got there I found this snuggle-fest. 💜💙

I used an airway clearance device, called LifeVac, to save my son's life in November 2021. Since then, I've been advocating to raise awareness about the device and get them into homes, schools, daycares, restaurants, senior care facilities, etc.

Rep. Tim Bonner introduced legislation that would require all public, private and parochial schools in Pennsylvania to have 1 non-invasive airway clearance (choking) device in the school nurse's office and the cafeteria.
