Alhambra, Granada, Spain.
The King's Hall - detail.
The architectural complex of the Alhambra, the work of the Nasrids, was built on one of the hills overlooking the city and can be dated from 1238 to 1492.
It has undergone various transformations over the centuries, due to the dynasties that have followed one another. The monumental complex is basically made up of three distinct parts.
-The Alcazaba (the fortress) which had defensive functions.
Its construction dates back to the reign of Mohamed I (1232-1273), who ordered the construction of the main walls and three towers: the Torre de la Vela, Torre Quebrada and Torre del Homenaje.
-The Nasrid Palaces, consisting of two independent palaces, the Palazzo de Comares and the Palace of the Lions, as well as the annexed Mexuar, served as luxurious homes for the reigning sultans.
Chronologically they were built after the Alcabaza, the Generalife and the Partal starting from the first thirty years of the 14th century.
-The Generalife Palace and gardens extend to the edge of the Alhambra walls. The ancient palace was built between the 12th and 14th centuries. Later, in the 15th century, it was enlarged and renovated by the Genoese family of the Grimaldi Pallavicini.
It became state-owned (and associated with the Alhambra complex as a national monument) at the beginning of the 20th century.
‘How can you disbelieve in Allah when you were lifeless and He brought you to life; then He will cause you to die, then He will bring you [back] to life, and then to Him you will be returned.’
