Juneteenth recognizes and commemorates the striving toward freedom and equality for all Americans. It is a powerful reminder that some systems of injustice and inequality have marred our shared life together, but justice shall indeed be a hallmark of this nation and of God’s communion with us. We at Pittsburgh Seminary recognize the lasting impacts of injustice in social and economic limitations on many in this country and commemorate Juneteenth as an opportunity to renew our commitments to justice as a theological imperative and freedom as the truth of the reign of Jesus Christ.

Many contemporary congregations face unprecedented challenges of decline, disinterest, and even suspicion while also maintaining unique resources and capacities for faithful community life and social impact. As a result, The Black Mountain School of Theology & Community (BMSTC) and the Miller Summer Youth Institute (SYI) at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary (PTS) will host the Intergenerational Leadership Conference on the PTS campus June 12-15, 2024

The conference begins in a collective and multigenerational analysis by participants of the challenges and possibilities of the present. Our primary focus will be to provide leaders with distinct tools, practices, and a visionary imagination for new forms of congregational life based on deep listening skills drawn from community organizing, corporate discernment rooted in historical theology and organizing, and a commitment to substantive action that can dynamically enliven the identities of contemporary congregations. Miller Summer Youth Institute (SYI) Summer Fellowship 2023 07/20/2023

Since the beginning of June, the Miller Summer Youth Institute (SYI) has hosted their living-learning fellowship program on the PTS campus. This year’s cohort of undergraduate summer fellowship students from around the country, engaged in the topic, “Listening to the Land: Cultivating Hope through Spiritual Practice and Theological Reflection in a Time of Crisis.” Each week, SYI Director Tanner Capps and a rotation of nonprofit leaders, academics, and practitioners facilitated classroom co-learning, and was reinforced and expanded by experiential learning at the public classroom of Garfield Community Farm, led by alum and permaculture specialist, John Creasy ’06. The students also had ample opportunities to explore Pittsburgh and its neighborhoods, get to know PTS staff at weekly cookouts, and form community as a cohort. PTS grads Steffan Johnson ’23 and Simeon Rodgers ’23, and current PTS student Emil Cowser served as Seminary curriculum coordinators.
