Meet the Dance Instructors! 🕺💃🏽
Silvino Reyes Farina has been dancing salsa for over a decade. Shortly after moving from LA in 2019 to pursue a PhD in mathematics, he began teaching with the student group Tartan Salsa and building the rueda de casino scene in Pittsburgh with a rapidly growing group of local casineros.
Sophia Robert is a cognitive neuroscience PhD student at CMU. After the pandemic, she started dancing salsa, bachata, and kizomba in Pittsburgh through Tartan Salsa and has been teaching there and with the PGH Casineros for a year.
Julia Conti is a cognitive psychology PhD student at CMU. She began learning bachata through YouTube videos during the pandemic and has been teaching salsa, Rueda de casino, and bachata for the past two years with Tartan Salsa, Crossbody Dance + Movement, and PGH Casineros at Apasionado Dance.
All three are proud to be part of the Latin dance community in Pittsburgh and look forward to sharing some moves with you.✨️ 🎶🎶

Hugo Alexander Cruz Machado is a Cuban-born, award winning, internationally renowned drummer and composer who has performed in South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Mexico, Chile, Venezuela, and the United States.
Hugo is the leader of the group Caminos, who fuse rhythms and melodies of Afro-Cuban, Cuban, and
American jazz and funk styles in an original contemporary expression that honors traditional Cuban form.
Caminos have made appearances at Fábrica de Artes in Havana, Cuba, Smithsonian Institution in
Washington, DC, the Pittsburgh International Jazz

Olivia, a Pittsburgh Native, recently joined our board in May thanks to a mentorship program with the CMU Latino Community. She is a dedicated member of the community, and spends her time volunteering for organizations like Literacy Pittsburgh, Casa San Jose, and now ALPFA Pittsburgh! With her passion for sustainability, equity, and community outreach, we know Olivia will make vital contributions to our organization.

🎉Hispanic Heritage Month is here! A big shoutout to the Latino and Hispanic communities in the Pittsburgh region. According to the 2022 Allegheny County Latinx Needs Assessment Report, while the overall population growth was under 1%, Pittsburgh’s Latino population surged by 80% between 2010 and 2020. The Latino sub-economy in Pennsylvania is also growing at an impressive 6.2%, as noted by José Jurado, research economist at Arizona State University, in an interview with Pittsburgh’s NPR station.
