I often do photos for people for their dating profiles, and I am intrigued by the nature of these unique photo shoots. They are very different than other types of photo shoots and require some subtle finessing because their goals are different than a business headshot or a family photo. When my client is looking to attract interest as a romantic partner, I need to see them through the eyes of someone clicking through a dating site. What stands out about this person?
I did some research into what makes for effective dating profile photos and found some interesting pointers that I keep in mind, but I’ve added some other tips along the way:
-Smiling (with teeth!) and looking at the camera is a must because it shows that you are approachable. Grins are also nice. I coach through a range of expressions to show their personalities as much as possible.
-Looking away and laughing is good because it shows that you are sociable and maybe this picture caught them at a candid fun party time!
-Natural environments are a must (it can’t look like a professional shot these photos!)
-Movement is good! The less posed looking, the better. These photos need to look like they were taken by a friend. This is easier said than done.
-A variety of locations is good (but not necessary to be a certain identifiable place). These photos must look like they were taken on different days and at different places, but usually we do them in an hour in my studio. Magic!
-Good, flattering lighting is a must. Heavy filters are bad. This is why professional photos are best.
-Clothing that says something about who you are is a must but don’t try too hard- it’s got to look a easy breezy and not contrived. It’s sometimes good to consult a friend who can help, or bring a bunch of ideas and I can help narrow it down.
-Accessories are important and can say something about you. A gym bag, a laptop, glasses, sunglasses, gloves, a hat, a guitar, a book, a favorite pen and notebook… think about what you use every day and bring some of your stuff.
-Props can work but keep it simple. Holding a coffee cup or water glass in my pseudo café scene, looking away, laughing, always looks great!
-Hold a pet to show that you like animals (I have a few)!
-Break the rules! Show who you are!!
This photo was taken at the end of a shoot where we followed all the “rules” then I asked if he had any hobbies and he said he loved flying planes. I said, do you have any of your gear with you? And he lit up and said, I sure do!! This was one of his favorite photos. 🙂
The spring leaves show me new ideas and hopeful birth amongst uncertainty. Love carries on as seasons change. I light a fire and toss in those old twigs – they are happy to move on to become dust. Rain washes away the tears and renews spirits. Celebrations repeat traditions with new cast members singing the same songs we’ve always heard, and we all clap and hug and eat delicious cake and give gifts because it feels good to be together - all this wonderful appreciation and love. We watch and gasp at an eclipse, and far away the sand and waves listen to the moon, tides tell the time, people come and go, and life is so amazing and beautiful.

I love creating photos for talented musicians that show their personalities!!
is an amazing performer and I'm so grateful I got to spend some time with him. We were able to capture different facets of his style and he's able to use these for so many purposes. Yay!
Julia Erickson is a world-renowned dancer and sets the stage for the new Waiting in the Wings book by telling us the story of how she was in another country when the quarantine started. It wasn't just happening here! It was affecting people all over the world. Like all of us- she had to make some tough decisions - and Julia has handled it all with grace like the superstar that she is! Photographing her was a joy for me.
