What's summer like at Propel Schools? It's a time of preparation!
Some scholars are improving their literacy skills through our free Summer Reading Center, an extension of our K-2 Literacy Initiative. This is one of the many educational supports that Propel families are wild about. Based on the science of reading, our approach to reading instruction ensures scholars are reading at least at grade level. Summer learning...this is just one way we prepare for a successful academic year.
π’ Mark your calendars! ποΈ This Saturday at 10 a.m., the Propel Northside Community Wellness Center doors will open for The Free Store. ποΈπ± Fresh produce from Consumer Fresh Produce, bread from Breadworks, and personal care items from Global Links will be available for those in need.
π Summer is in full swing, and our scholars are having a blast! From designing a pinball machine with STEM Coding Lab, learning about nature with Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy,and conducting science experiments with Mad Scienceπ¬π³π’ our summer program provides scholars with enrichment opportunities to ensure a solid start to the 2024-2025 school year. π Scholars are actively engaged, exploring, learning, and having fun!

We're launching a new attendance initiative called "Strive for Fewer Than 5" to emphasize the importance of regular school attendance in achieving academic success. Studies show a strong correlation between attendance and academic achievement. By attending school regularly, scholars are better able to retain information, develop strong study skills, and build relationships with their teachers and classmates.

Propel Hazelwood had a moving celebration honoring the promotion of 8th-grade scholars π. It was filled with immense pride, joy, and even a few tears π’. During the event, Social Studies Educator Shawn Collins πemphasized that these scholars represent a promising future π. Assistant Principal Lacey Macchia highlighted their ability to conquer πͺ any challenge on their path to success, citing, βYou have already done it!β Principal Meryl Johnson guided the class as they expressed gratitude by presenting thank you notes to a supportive person π€. To conclude the ceremony, Community Site Coordinator Justin Peeks shared his affection for the scholars, reminiscing, βThey have seen me mold and they have seen me scold.β

Propel Afterschool Scholars are rallying at the state Capitol to advocate for funding for after-school programming. Our scholars are speaking in front of a coalition of elected officials, demonstrating their commitment to the importance of Afterschool.
