Remembering the life of THOMAS HOLLANDER 07/15/2024

City Theatre mourns the loss of Thomas "Tom" Hollander who passed away on July 10th.

Tom had an extraordinary impact on City Theatre after joining the newly-incorporated organization's board in 1987. He would serve continuously from that time, including TWO stints as board president (1987-88 and 1997-2000), until 2018 when he was elected to our honorary board.

The son of a coal miner and steel worker, Tom was a highly regarded attorney throughout his professional career in Pittsburgh and, as a result, was City Theatre's unofficial "parliamentarian" on a host of matters. But most importantly, he was a passionate champion for arts and culture around the region, with a special affinity for City Theatre's mission and work on stage.

Tom represented the very best of board membership and volunteer leadership: he provided counsel and advice, hosted events at his home, supported City Theatre's annual fund and encouraged others to do the same, made connections on our behalf throughout his personal and professional circles, and could be counted on to attend anything and everything going on at the theatre.

Tom was beloved by staff, fellow board members, and everyone who had the great fortune of knowing him.

The entire City Theatre family extends our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends, including his children Leslie, Scott, and David, and his six grandchildren.

Thank you, Tom, for all that you accomplished in life and in service to your community--and always with that unforgettable smile. City Theatre owes you an immeasurable debt of gratitude.

Remembering the life of THOMAS HOLLANDER THOMAS HOLLANDER passed away. This is the full obituary where you can express condolences and share memories. Published in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette on 2024-07-12.

Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate Marc last night! It was a beautiful evening!

A quick snapshot of City Theatre's celebration of Marc Masterson tonight. He's retiring as artistic director, but he'll be back soon, to direct "Birthday Candles" at City in 2025. I didn't take any lobby shots, but wow, Marc's fellow theater leaders in Pittsburgh came out in force! The formal celebration was hosted by City board member Tamara Tunie, a CMU alum who last night presented the Excellence in Theatre Education Tony Awards and drove from New York to Pittsburgh early this morning to be here for the event. A video of tributes from collaborators, including from his other theater homes - Actors Theatre of Louisville and South Coast Rep - was very touching. Lots of emotions going on on the South Side.

In 1976, celebrity artist Andy Warhol traveled to Iran to take Polaroid pictures of the Shah’s wife. This imagined experience of an encounter with a young Iranian radical is a fiery, thought-provoking drama about art, revolution, and discovering a world beyond yourself.

Season Finale 'Andy Warhol in Iran' Marks Masterson's Final Chapter as a City Theatre Artistic Director 04/23/2024

“What I like about it is, it’s not preachy. It’s not trying to convince you of a right and wrong,” Masterson said. “In this scenario, it’s helping to see how politics affects human beings – it’s not an abstract idea. Decisions that are made affect people. So I think the purpose of the play exists in the context of Iran, but above and beyond that, in the context of anyone who is swept up in a political crisis, and fighting for what they perceive to be justice.”

Season Finale 'Andy Warhol in Iran' Marks Masterson's Final Chapter as a City Theatre Artistic Director By SHARON EBERSON It won’t be long before Marc Masterson wakes up to new adventures and some well-earned “me” time, and without the exhilaration and headaches of running a theater company. Just now…
