It's not every day you see a university president biking around town with a group of students! 🚲
We’ll let you in on a university tradition: each year we host a Presidential Bike ride to teach students about Downtown Pittsburgh's rich history and the area surrounding campus.
It's a time of bonding for our students and for them to take ownership and appreciation for the area. They use their new knowledge to help educate younger students about places to go and things they can do around town!

Monsters, monologues and mayhem made for a delightfully chilling week as the School of Arts & Sciences' Department of Literature, Culture and Society hosted its Creative Writing Camp, inspired by the horror genre. Middle and high school students spent the week developing villainous creatures, macabre backstories and hair-raising plots, all the while growing their writing and storytelling skillsets.
"I learned a lot about writing in general – how to be creative when doing it, how to just let loose and let your mind go wild, really just how to get better at it," said Declan Jolin, a 7th-grade student at Mellon Middle School, Mt. Lebanon School District. "This camp has helped me out a lot."

Meet Katlyn Proof ’23 ’24, the first Point Park alumna selected for the inaugural Mattsmakerspace Fellowship Program, an expenses-paid experiential learning opportunity abroad for graduates to immerse themselves in maker education at SEK International Schools in Ireland.
Proof, who played on the University’s softball team, earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education with dual certification in special education PreK-12 and a master’s degree in athletic coaching and administration. She previously traveled to Ireland for a field experience and student teaching placement.
"My dream job is to work in an elementary school and focus on STEM education," she said. "Schools often have special programs or classes, like art and music. I think STEM should be one of those. I would love to have my own maker space and teach STEM at least once a week. I think all students need it. It would change lives."
"That's why I'm so excited about this Matt's Maker Space Fellowship. It is exactly what I want to do."

If you're from Pittsburgh, you've likely been to a wedding with a cookie table!
Laura Magone is best known for her page "The Wedding Cookie Table Community." The page originated as a place for Magone to collect information for a documentary about the unique Pittsburgh tradition and has taken on a life of its own with a highly-engaged community of 280,000 members as of July 2024.
For a documentarian with a strong sense of community, it was a short step for Magone to discover an interest in local journalism and the role of the citizen reporter. Magone was one of the first graduates of the Citizen Reporting Academy presented by the Center for Media Innovation at Point Park University.
"We live in a world where people rely more and more on unverified sources for news. I'd like to be part of the solution as a credible source who can explore timely topics and share what I learn with the public. I am passionate about the vital role of journalism in a democracy."

Colonial Trust Bank, also known today as University Center — a part of fourth avenue's Financial District.
At it’s height, the fourth avenue area of Pittsburgh was considered one of the largest financial centers with banking and stock exchange, outside of Wall Street.
The building is made of multiple banks that started with the original, on fourth avenue in 1902. In 1905 the banks expanded the building and added the “Longest Banking Room in the World." (second photo) The building itself has survived many historical events over the years from the St. Patrick's Day flood and eventually moving from a bank to part of our university.

A summer camp that focuses on experiential learning, networking with professionals and visiting firms throughout Downtown Pittsburgh? We've got it! ✅
High school students from Delaware, New Jersey, Ohio and Pennsylvania spent a week exploring the career possibilities available in the accounting field as Point Park University hosted its 2024 Accounting Career Awareness Program (ACAP).
"I enjoyed getting to network with people from companies located Downtown. It was helpful to see the different sides of accounting and learn more about the possibilities available. I really liked the etiquette dinner. I thought it was really helpful, and I got to network with employees from PricewaterhouseCoopers (Life at PwC). I definitely liked getting the feel of what it's like to go to college." — Katherine Williams, Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center
