Our programs pair innovation with deep technical knowledge, rooted in our faculty's passion for learning and wealth of experience.
One of the more recent additions to our faculty, Assistant Teaching Professor Pedro Bustamante, is an expert in information networking and teaches a mix of core courses in our Master of Science in Information Networking (MSIN) and special topics courses. Bustamante has explored various areas of networking, from wired and wireless networks to Software Defined Networking (SDN) and policy. We wrapped up another orientation and started off the semester with a bang on our annual INI Boat Cruise. Students had a chance to see the city of bridges up close, connect with each other and unwind before tackling the semester. We can't wait to see what you will all achieve at the INI!

Today students learned about some of the resources and opportunities available on campus, including:
💼 Daniel Carr, our Director of Career Services, gave some great advice on making the most of career advising at the INI.
🔒 Lorrie Cranor from Carnegie Mellon University CyLab presented about security and privacy research and courses.
🎤 Hanan Hibshi, an assistant teaching professor at the INI *and* INI alum, presented about academic policies.
🤝 A panel of current INI students shared advice for incoming students about life in Pittsburgh, managing coursework and the internship search. Thank you, Dhruv Jain, Aditya Giri, Olivia Wu, Shyamal Vaderia and Jaafar Gharib!
We held the first day of our orientation today. It's always a joy to meet the next class at the start of a new semester! Students were introduced to our staff and each other as they developed their class motto, explored campus and learned about all their resources here at the INI. We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow!

INI alum and co-founder of oak9, Aakash Shah is working to make security easier by building it into the software development process. With the acquisition of oak9 by Drata earlier this year, he is leading the integration of oak9 into the Drata platform, creating a new capability that integrates automated security with compliance. picoCTF: High School Hacking Competition is making cybersecurity education more accessible to everyone. Helmed by Carnegie Mellon University CyLab's Megan Kearns, with the INI's own Hanan Hibshi as a faculty advisor, the program has grown steadily since its inception in 2013.
Beyond the hacking competition that invites participants with all levels of experience to practice their cybersecurity skills, they developed a new initiative designed to give teachers the tools to educate their students on cybersecurity fundamentals. GenCyber is in its second year and recently wrapped up another successful camp.

The Master of Science in Mobile and IoT Engineering (MSMITE) is our second bicoastal program. MSMITE students split their time, experiencing both the Carnegie Mellon University main campus in Pittsburgh and the CMU Silicon Valley campus, gaining a unique experience in the heart of tech innovation. Bicoastal students also participate in Practicum projects where they partner with companies, government agencies and nonprofits to apply their interdisciplinary skills to real-world problems, gaining experience working in the field and building their networks.
The MSMITE program prepares graduates to:
💻 Apply mobile and embedded system skills and principles toward the design and development of products and services across a variety of vertical markets
📊 Critically analyze historical and state-of-the-art mobile and IoT technologies relating to devices, networks, providers, data and applications to identify trade-offs and develop design principles
💡 Demonstrate knowledge and skills regarding processing on constrained hardware, designing software for embedded computing, application delivery and user interactions
