World Brain Day was this week. Addiction alters brain function and structure, affecting decision-making, impulse control and reward mechanisms. Understanding these neurological changes is crucial for effective treatment and prevention strategies. By raising awareness about addiction as a brain disorder, we can combat stigma and promote empathy and support for individuals seeking recovery. We provide evidence-based treatment programs to help those with substance use disorders. By prioritizing research, education and support, we can foster healthier communities and brighter futures for those affected by addiction.

Crossroads is in the news. Dr. Josh Hall, Medical Director, is a featured physician discussing recent changes by SAMHSA regarding take-home methadone flexibilities aimed at improving access for patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. SAMHSA finalized regulations allowing greater flexibility for clinics to provide take-home doses of methadone, reducing the need for daily clinic visits. Read the article in its entirety here:
SAMHSA Finalized Take-Home Methadone Flexibilities, But Challenges to Access Persist As fentanyl proliferates the illicit drug market and opioid-related overdoses surge, access to the life-saving medication methadone is more critical than
We want to thank this young woman for telling her courageous story. Opioid use disorder can strike anyone - and this woman talks about how this disease has alienated her from her family. We applaud her for the bravery that it takes to speak out about opioid use disorder. Humans of NY share personal stories like this because we are all struggling with something in our lives. We've helped 300,000 take back their lives from opioid use disorder. And we can help you, too. Read the full story of the woman here:
Prescription opioids and he**in are chemically similar and can produce a similar high. He**in is cheaper and easier to get than prescription opioids, so some people switch to using he**in instead. The National Institute on Drug Abuse data showed that in 2011 an estimated 4 to 6 percent who misuse prescription opioids switched to he**in and about 80 percent of people who used he**in first misused prescription opioids. More recent data suggest that he**in is frequently the first opioid people use. In a study of those entering treatment for opioid use disorder, approximately one-third reported he**in as the first opioid they used regularly to get high. Addiction is a complex and multifaceted issue, and it continues to be shrouded in stigma despite its devastating impact on individuals and society as a whole. This stigma not only affects how people with substance use disorder are perceived but also influences access to treatment and support systems crucial for recovery. Nearly 110,000 overdoses occurred in 2022. That's nearly 300 people dying per day. Addiction is a disease, not a moral failing. And the stigma needs to stop so that people can get the help that they deserve. If you or someone you know is struggling, please visit https://hubs.ly/Q02Gs8Sh0 to get help. Our patient access specialists are available 24/7/365.

"Crossroads in Sharon Hill is the best experience I’ve ever had in this particular atmosphere. The support is phenomenal, and the doctor is a doll. She’s the best doctor I’ve had. The girls at the front desk are super nice and sweet. They've got a quick rhythm they go by and the system is great. You are in and out and you have all the information you need before leaving. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to be in an MAT program and specifically this office in Sharon Hill. It’s a great group!" - Patient from Sharon Hill, PA

"I've always had a positive experience at Crossroads. Both physicians are amazing and caring. They don't rush you along to the next patient, and the counselors build a wonderful relationship with you to where you're comfortable really opening up to them. The facility helps hold you accountable, which in turn helps you work your recovery in a positive way. They are a part of my recovery safety net and I'm glad to have them on my team." - Patient from Danville, VA
Benzodiazepines can be addictive, especially with prolonged use. Withdrawal can be severe, including agitation, anxiety and even seizures. When benzodiazepines and opioids are used together, they can enhance each other’s effects, leading to respiratory depression, sedation and even overdose. The risk is particularly high when both drugs are taken recreationally or without medical supervision. Talk to your care team about the risks versus benefits of benzodiazepines.

July is National Minority Health Awareness Month. Did you know that according to SAMHSA, treatment rates vary significantly by race and ethnicity:
- White individuals receive treatment 23.5% of the time.
- Black individuals receive treatment 18.6% of the time.
- Hispanic individuals receive treatment 17.6% of the time.
With these statistics in mind, we need to stop the stigma and support equitable access to treatment and support for all.

As the fireworks light up the night sky, we gather to celebrate America’s independence. But for those in recovery, this holiday can evoke both joy and anxiety. Here are some tips to celebrate the holiday sober: (1) Surround yourself with friends and family who support your sobriety. Avoid situations where you might feel pressured to drink or use substances. (2) The red, white, and blue can inspire creativity! Dress patriotically, whip up colorful treats or host a sober barbecue. (3) Gather with your recovery community to watch the fireworks. You’re not alone; millions share this journey. This Independence Day, let’s honor our personal freedom—the freedom to heal, grow and embrace life without substances.
When pain pills are no longer enough, many people turn to he**in. The journey from legitimate prescription use to he**in addiction is more common than we might think. Many patients unwittingly became addicted to prescription opioids after misusing them. When patients try to stop taking opioids, they experience withdrawal symptoms (anxiety, diarrhea, insomnia, etc.). As pills become more expensive, patients seek alternatives. He**in, unfortunately, is cheaper and easily accessible within the same social circles where patients buy extra pills.
He**in addiction patients are everyday people – parents, teachers, CEOs. Ending the stigma around addiction is crucial for saving lives and providing effective treatment. Remember, addiction doesn’t discriminate based on occupation or background. If you or someone you know is struggling with opioid use disorder, please visit https://hubs.ly/Q02DXtPB0.

Imagine if, during a public health crisis, nearly 80 percent of Americans did not have access to the medication they need to save their lives. According to a study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), this is happening for those suffering from the opioid epidemic. The JAMA study showed that only 1 in 5 receive the treatment, which includes access to life-saving medications such as methadone or buprenorphine. Medication-assisted treatment is considered the gold standard of care. For more information, visit https://hubs.ly/Q02DPk060.
