🌟MEET THE TOWN MONDAY: LET’S SHINE A LIGHT ON… OGUNQUIT, MAINE!🌟
The town’s name, pronounced oh-gun-kwit, means “a beautiful place by the sea,” and offers up to 90 percent of its shoreline to the public. Ogunquit is a predominantly seasonal town, with tourists enjoying all it has to offer in the summer months. Resident population hovers around 900. It has been honored as one of the best little beach towns nationally, and for good reason. Ogunquit and Footbridge Beaches offer a vast amount of beach at low tide, with surrounding rocky coastlines to enjoy. The Marginal Way is a 1.5 mile walk along a portion of the town’s rocky seaside coastline. It ends in Perkins Cove, which is a small offshoot of Ogunquit featuring many quaint shops, lobster houses, and a pedestrian drawbridge that must be manually lifted for boats to enter the Cove. It is increasingly becoming a year round destination, as the Chamber hosts many events surrounding nearly all holidays each year. It also is home to the Ogunquit Playhouse (local theater) and the Ogunquit Museum of Modern Art right along the ocean.

Eliot is a small town in York County (just west of Kittery, Maine) that lines the picturesque Piscataqua River. With 6,000 residents, Eliot is the perfect spot for residents who want a small town, rural feel, yet are still minutes away from “the action” of Kittery and Portsmouth. The cost of living is also more affordable, and Eliot has potential to be a great investment as the Seacoast area expands, especially considering its location on the water. Eliot has its own elementary school, but feeds into South Berwick’s reputable Marshwood Middle and High Schools. The Seacoast Waldorf School is also located in Eliot.

With almost 19,000 residents, S**o is part of York County, and is often considered a suburb of Portland and a twin to neighboring city Biddeford. S**o is primarily a residential/suburban town, but also sees a rise in visitors during summer months due to its proximity to Old Orchard Beach. Ferry Beach State Park and Funtown Splashtown USA are both located here as well, attracting tourists every summer. If you’re thinking of moving here, S**o is a great affordable option located centrally between Portland and Portsmouth off I-95. Oceanfront condos and estates line Ferry Beach & the S**o Bay. If you’re looking for “more house” for your money, S**o and Biddeford are 2 great options, both of which are close to beaches, winter activities and a stone’s throw from Portland and Portsmouth. For education, S**o is home to Thornton Academy, a preparatory school serving grades 6-12. The S**o public school system includes 3 elementary schools (Fairfield & Young Schools, K-2, and C.K. Burns School 3-5), and S**o Middle School (Grades 6-8). S**o Island School (in Biddeford, Grades 9-12) and Thornton Academy are private high schools in the area, but there is no public high school in S**o.

Additionally, its school system is reputable, with nearly 70 percent of town funds being appropriated toward the school system. Similar to other seacoast towns, York is a well-known summer destination, offering 4 beaches, 3 golf clubs, and the famous Nubble Lighthouse. Short Sands is a lively beach destination with restaurants, entertainment, York’s Wild Kingdom, playgrounds, and a quaint, historic waterfront downtown with an arcade, bowling, taffy shop, and numerous shops and restaurants. Long Sands Beach offers an alternative to the busyness of Short Sands, primarily with small hotels and inns along its extensive beach.

Located less than 20 minutes southwest of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Stratham is on target to become an extended “suburb” of Portsmouth as Portsmouth continues to expand in the near future. There are roughly 7,300 residents in this town in which 37% of the population consists of families, and 35% of people are between 45 and 65 years old. Bordered to the west by the Squamscott River (a tributary of the Piscataqua River), Stratham is a great option for young families, offering larger square footage at a lower price than Portsmouth. Stratham consists of a growing number of upscale communities, some of which border the river. The school system is growing, and at the high school level, students attend Exeter High School, a reputable neighboring school district.
