The Future of Children
Providing research and analysis to promote effective policies and programs for children
Investing in Latino Children and Youth, Edited by Marta Tienda and Lisa Gennetian: This volume of the ANNALS is novel in taking stock of the contemporary well-being of Latinx children and youth in the U.S. today, and using this foundation to look to the future and curating the forefront of knowledge to guide social investment. Particular attention is paid to the role of public policy in enhancing or disrupting Latino children’s access to health care, quality schooling, household economic resources and stability, and, in nurturing positive and high quality family and child care environments. https://uk.sagepub.com/en-gb/eur/investing-in-latino-children-and-youth/book281582

The Future of Children journal by Princeton University and The Brookings Institution will feature our research-practice partnership with UVA School of Education & Human Development. The journal will be available online on April 29th. Stay tuned.
Dear friends of the Future of Children:
We will be sunsetting the Future of Children journal this year following publication of our spring issue, “Research-Practice Partnerships to Support Early Education.”
Many factors led to this decision, chief among them the retirement of key personnel—our editor-in-chief, Sara McLanahan of Princeton University, and senior editor Ron Haskins of the Brookings Institution—and the demands of continual fundraising.
We thank you for your support of the Future of Children over the 17 years since our team at Princeton and Brookings took over the journal from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. We believe that the journal and its accompanying policy briefs and outreach activities have made a real difference in the lives of children, in the areas of education, physical and mental health, racial and ethnic disparities, and many more. No matter the subject, we’ve remained committed to one central idea: that sound evidence—rather than ideology, guesswork, or wishful thinking—should underlie both policy and practice.
All of our issues and policy briefs will continue to be available free of charge on our website, www.futureofchildren.org; they are also archived on JSTOR.
Again, thank you for reading, and for all you do to improve children’s lives.
Sincerely,
Sara McLanahan, editor-in-chief

Ron Haskins, senior editor
Melissa Kearney, senior editor
Cecilia Elena Rouse, senior editor

Death rates have declined among children and young adults in the poorest counties in the United States, according to the study published in Science. Better health care, food and nutrition programs and less pollution are all potential contributors.
The results should be particularly encouraging to policymakers engaged in projects aimed to promote public health, like anti-tobacco initiatives or food and nutrition programs.
Mortality Rates Improve Among Kids and Young Adults in the US, Especially in Poor Counties Recent studies of mortality trends paint a gloomy picture for many middle-aged and older Americans, but a new study focused on children reveals a more optimistic future.
