“帝国崛起 (Empire Rising)” by Lauren YS is complete!

Internationally renowned artist Lauren YS imbued this work with Providence cultural references, paying homage to the historic Chinese and South Asian communities, the strong LGBTQ+ presence, and the longstanding history of theater downtown.

* Far left: a nod to Perry Watkins holding scissors and thread, the first Black scenic designer on Broadway (from Providence), the Port Arthur logo on the fan referencing a Chinese restaurant and dancehall that was a pillar of the Asian community and a safe haven for the LGBTQ+ community to meet.

* Red swooping curtains highlight PPAC, Trinity Repertory Theatre, and others that have existed in the area.

* Background arches reference Chinese Restaurants and Dancehalls that went hand in hand with the 50’s-80's theater experience. Dancehalls also served as unique performance venues for entertainment.

* Middle two: speak to the historic nearby Chinatown, based on ancient Chinese opera figures while incorporating modern drag elements. Their robes reference various Asian communities and histories. One holds playing cards nodding to Kings and Queens of the Drag community and to the RI Bar "Kings & Queens" (1977-2002), a hub for community events.

*Second from the right: references Ladda Nurv, a local Southeast Asian Drag artist and staple of the community.

*Far right: celebrates the history of Providence’s LGBTQ+ community and theatergoers, inspired by Francis "Auriema" Renault, a 1910 Drag Performer from Providence donning jewelry worn by Beatrice Temkin, "A trailblazing LGBTQ+ ally and founding member of AIDS Project RI” and namesake of .

This project is a signature PVDFest Public Art Commission (Providence Art Culture Tourism) championed by Providence Mayor Brett Smiley to celebrate the culture and histories of communities and following a PVDFest tradition of collaborating with national and international artists to encourage tourism and enhance public space through quality of life initiatives. Special thanks to Paolino Properties and Inoperable.

Following a competitive national search led by EOS Transition Partners, The Avenue Concept (TAC) Board of Directors has appointed Tracy Jonsson-Laboy as TAC’s next Executive Director, succeeding Founder Yarrow Thorne. Our team welcomed Tracy on August 14th, 2024. 🎉

Tracy Jonsson-Laboy is returning to Rhode Island after spending three years in Rejmyre, Sweden, where she was Executive Director of the Rejmyre Art Lab Center for Peripheral Studies. She comes to TAC already well-versed in Rhode Island’s non-profit sector, as she was both Founder and Executive Director of Newport Art House, an artist-run place-making non-profit in Newport, RI. 💡

In 2020, Tracy served as policy architect for the City of Providence Department of Art, Culture and Tourism (ACT) PVDx2031: A Cultural Plan for Culture Shift; a roadmap and community call to action in partnership with cultural leaders and ACT. Tracy holds a master's Degree in Historic Preservation from Roger Williams University and is a practicing interdisciplinary artist exhibiting internationally. She is currently exploring conceptual craft and the racialization of materials in her For Flax Sake project, supported by the Rhode Island State Council for the Humanities, as well as the role of BIPOC craft and textile practice through Homespun, an Awesome Foundation supported project. She spins, knits, weaves, sings, plants and tends within these projects. 🧶

We are delighted to have Tracy guide us as TAC enters a new era following Yarrow’s departure. She has the skills to help us with our strategic planning initiatives and to implement our new organizational mission and vision of producing exceptional visual public art and experiences with artists and communities designed to inspire joy, dialogue, and belonging. 🎨

Final shots of “The Serpent,” the new Weybosset Facade (streetside) mural by Amanda Hill!

“This piece is an exploration of how a single element, no matter the size, can profoundly alter one's environment—a theme that resonates across various experiences. The work then delves into the dynamic between an idealized, serene place and a place of fear and terror. The figure’s expression is intentionally ambiguous, leaving the viewer to question whether she is looking for assistance or assuring them she is in control.”

Evoking a sense of idyl rooted in femininity and nature, this work features a woman at the shore of a serene pool. Meanwhile, a serpent lurks plotting—threatening to disrupt her ephemeral peace.

Stay tuned for updates on the lot side this fall! Special thanks to for support of the artist residency and for supplies. Additional support provided in part by a grant from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, through an appropriation by the Rhode Island General Assembly and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Sneak peak of the new Weybosset Facade Streetside mural by Amanda Hill! ✨

This piece will feature a woman floating amongst water lilies, exploring themes of utopia and idyl paradise and how they can be disturbed by external forces. This iconography is partially inspired by Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood paintings of Ophelia. 🪷

Amanda Hill is a multimedia artist and muralist living and working in Greater Boston. Much of Hill's work is rooted in the exploration of what many considered to be commonplace. Hill takes an interest in a community's ability to make and experience art. As such, she specializes in empowering, honoring, and strengthening communities through art—whether this is through her own mural-work or championing others.

Stay tuned for the completed mural! Special thanks to Paolino Properties for support of the artist residency and Adler's RI for supplies. This residency is also supported by RISCA - Rhode Island State Council on the Arts

Snapshots of the Graff Jam hosted by Nerve on 7/6! 🌟

On Saturday, over 30 people joined us for a day of spray painting, music, refreshments, and good company - despite the rain! Graff Jams are an opportunity for artists to come and create colorful pieces on our 360 feet of legal walls. In the summer, we try to host a Graff Jam every month! 🎨

Spaces are chosen on a first-come, first-serve basis and the walls are freshly buffed by our Paintbar & Installations Specialist Kendel Joseph to provide a blank canvas to fill with new ideas and creations.

We had a fantastic day holding an activation with interactive public art at the 6th Annual Culture Fest on Saturday, hosted by Southside Cultural Center of Rhode Island ! We got to work with local residents to create custom TAC tote bags and learn more about what kind of public art engages them - including Providence Mayor Brett Smiley ! 🤩

Culture Fest was created to celebrate the rich, diverse history of Southside Providence, where TAC headquarters is located. Local artists, musicians, businesses and changemakers gathered for three days to exchange ideas, celebrate community, and spread magnetic joy. ✨

We love sharing the joy of public art with the community, and are grateful to have been a part of Culture Fest. Interacting and building relationships with local residents and organizations helps shape the future of TAC as we strive to produce art that inspires joy, inclusion, and belonging for those around us. ❤️‍🔥

Special shoutouts to our Community Participation Program Manager JanCarlos Terrero and former staff member Justin Case for bringing to CultureFest, as well as NaturalzNatural for working with dozens of community members to create their own customized special totes. 🛍️

Happy Juneteenth!

This time last year, a bill co-sponsored by District 6 State Senator and TAC HQ District representative Tiara Mack was signed to declare Juneteenth an official holiday in the State of Rhode Island starting this year. We encourage our staff and board to celebrate and demonstrate a commitment to the holiday's history, traditions and impact. In lieu of this sentiment, we’d like to highlight the work of just a few amazing Black artists and business owners we have collaborated with.

1. Kendel Joseph is not only TAC’s Paintbar and Installations Specialist, but a muralist himself. In a muralist capacity, Joseph contributed to past works such as “Ode to Artist in Spraypaint” (2021) on the Weybosset Facade and was one of four artists who collaborated on “VOTE” (2020), a past iteration of the wall at One Ship Street. Now, you can see more of his work on our legal walls as he continues to develop his technique.

2. Ryan Adams, an artist based in Portland, ME, painted the previous iteration of the One Ship Street wall, “Stay Strong, Fight On” (2022). This summer, Adams is running “R&R’s Super Shopping Center, ™️” a pop-up store in Portland, in collaboration with his wife Rachel . This store will be open through the month of August. Adams is also a Co-Director of .here.studio and Creator of .together.project .

3. Garden of Journey, AKA Georgie Nakima, is a multimedia artist from Charlotte, NC, who created the vibrant mural “Salt Water” (2021) on the back side of 94 Washington St. Recently, Nakima painted a stunning mural for Starbucks in Miami, as well as pieces for The Oculus at the World Trade Center, Ackland Art Museum at UNC Chapel Hill, and Coachella 2023.

We hope you check out these artists all the time, they are amazing and we encourage sending them extra love on Juneteenth!

☀️You Are My Sunshine by Michael Ezzell ☀️

This new mural dedicated to the LGBTQIA+ community was installed just in time for Pride celebrations in Providence. 🌈

For the 2024 edition of the wall at One Ship Street, we wanted to honor the twenty-year anniversary of the first legal same-sex marriages in the U.S., which occurred in Massachusetts and California in January 2004 and offer the community a mural imbued with unbridled joy and exuberant color.

This piece features two mustached suns extending rays of light toward each other tenderly. An equal sign floating above their faces is surrounded in rays forming a loving heart; intertwining rays at the bottom of the composition “tie a knot” a nod, of course, to marriage. Ezzell pays homage to the transgender community with the light pink background and baby blue stars surrounding the pair of suns, a nod to the trans flag. The stars number 20, one for each year of the commemorated anniversary.

✨THANK YOU!!! 🎉

We held TAC TEN+, our first large-scale public art party and fundraiser, on Saturday, 6/8! We are so grateful that hundreds of you came to show support for The Avenue Concept and our Founder and Executive Director Yarrow Thorne.

For photo gallery (with downloadable pics) see the link in our comments!

The evening was full of stunning artwork, meaningful conversation, reminiscing, and joy. The excitement everyone brought was energizing, and we look forward to carrying that energy into TAC’s new era as Yarrow transitions toward new creative endeavors and away from his role as ED this summer.

Did you attend? If so, let us know your favorite part of the night!

Have you ever seen a public art Pop-up installation?

We are bringing art boards and sculpture works to you at our TAC TEN+ event!

Art boards are a snapshot of what our legal wall can look like at any given moment, paying homage to those who have been a part of our journey for the past 10+ years. Curated by Mikey Fernandez, Board of Directors, and Kendel Joseph, Paintbar and Installations Specialists, these 15 boards will be painted by people across generations of graffiti artists.

Panels will be painted by:

Above | Kendel Joseph | Nerve | Reak | Deluxe | Jimboe | Keptoe | and more!

We’ll also feature pedestal and full-scale sculpture works Carnival by Gillian Christy, a mockup of Starman by Brower Hatcher, a vase by David Allyn, Mark F-11 by Howie Sneider, Herky Jerky by Peter Diepenbrock, Lama by Peruko Ccopacatty, and Holding On by Barrett Kern

The sculptural works on display for TAC TEN + were made by local artists who played a critical role in helping TAC show the local RI community the positive impact of public sculpture in the state.

TAC sculpture began by installing temporary maquette sculptures in 2014 with pedestals made from upcycled Kennedy Plaza signage. Maquettes are used by artists as prototypes for their larger work. Since 2014, TAC has used recycled bases to install multiple pop-up sculpture installations across the city.

This is TAC’s first large-scale event and fundraiser. What’s most important is that our community members can attend regardless of financial barriers. See ticket page for details to request a complimentary ticket.

This week, we are giving a bittersweet sendoff to “Stay Strong, Fight On” (2022) by Ryan Adams at One Ship St.

This piece spreads the message of hope, encouragement, and resilience in the face of society’s challenges. Adams felt this message was particularly important in the wake of The Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, drawn to rallying cries on behalf of his two young daughters. The mural’s theme continues to be significant as we approach an election this November.

Though we are sad to wave goodbye to “Stay Strong, Fight On,” we are excited for the new piece that will be installed at One Ship Street this June. Continuing on a path of social justice, the incoming work by Michael Ezzell will celebrate 20 years of legally recognized marriage equality. Stay tuned for more information!

Pictured Past Chairs: Forrest Curl, Esther Garcia and Ramon Virola (2015 Met School Advisory Rebel Cloud, Lily Whelan, Jessyloo, Nate & Clay)

Over the years, TAC art chairs have become iconic symbols of TAC’s Legal Walls, yard, and activation events. The initiative has given artists, graff writers, students, and teachers a medium to explore their skills on a small-scale, functional surface. Art chairs combine 2D and 3D artwork, allowing artists to experiment with space, form, and design. In 2015 as a TAC artist fellow, John Tabor Jacobson created the art chair initiative as a way to create bridges between artists and community for Activisual PVD.

Today, chairs create interactive spaces for people to chill and exchange ideas at activation events.

Come sit with us! We'll host a special silent auction moment for two art chairs at TAC TEN+, our public art party and fundraiser on June 8.

Under Yarrow’s bold and passionate leadership, we developed “avenues” for public art, creating spaces where hundreds of artists, civic and business leaders, and advocates could connect and share stories through high-quality public art experiences.
With 300+ public artworks including murals, sculptures, legal graffiti walls, and events like Avenue Sandwich, Influx, and TAC Activations, we’ve combined mark-making, music, art, skateboarding, food, photography, video, storytelling, and community initiatives, dramatically changing the look, feel, and engagement with Providence and beyond.

***Have you taken a public art tour?***

Now that the warm spring air is upon us, it’s due time to remind you of our self-guided digital public art tours on the Pocketsights App!

Whether you’re walking, riding or driving, these comprehensive tours will help you explore dozens of murals, sculptures, and utility boxes throughout Downtown, the South Side and the West End, River Walk and Fox Point, and Warren.

Choose how to navigate between the works: you can mix it up, do it backwards, stop in the middle and save some for later, only go to the sculptures or only to the murals – the options are endless!

These tours were designed to help you see the greatest number of artworks in one day, but they do much more than lay out the locations of works we have on view; they provide educational information and pose thoughtful questions designed to make one consider the deeper meaning of the works.

Tag us in your pictures, we love seeing you enjoy the works we have on view!

The pieces pictured here are on our Downtown tour:

1. ARYZ x Emblem by ARYZ (2022)
2. “Continuous Line V (levity)” by Kelly Goff (2022)
3. “Misty Blue” by Andrew Hem (2017)
4. “Twelfth Unconformity” by Lydia J Musco (2023)
5. “Parade” by Michelle Perez
6. “Free Fall III” by Rado Kirov

*Attention Graff Artists!* This Saturday, 4/27, our Paintbar Specialist Kendel Joseph will be buffing the HQ Legal Wall so you can work on a fresh surface! He’ll be doing so at the end of every month from now through August to keep up with the busy summer season.

Thornedale, TAC’s landlord, opened the HQ gates to allow graffiti on the walls in an effort to provide legal space for community members interested in spray painting to create, as opposed to doing so in unwanted spaces.

Over the years, thousands of artists have painted this building from all over the world, and many parts of the space have changed: from shifting line heights, removing windows and walls, to creating new sidewalks and adding more wall space and materials based on community input.

As part of these changes, two rules have stayed consistent:
1. no art that is profane or offensive
2. no painting over the line without permission (this rule is based on input and building changes - it is consistent around the building and as high as it can go)

For Founder and ED Yarrow Thorne, “Buffing (rolling the wall a uniform color) helps keep the wall fresh and clears any tension between artist and the space. In some cases, artists are tired of seeing the work up, and in others artists run out of spaces to paint as they don’t want to go over other artists’ work. Since the yard has limited space, doing a regular buff that covers all walls is a process we can do to help reset the yard and keep the energy consistent and brave.”

Want to work on the wall but don’t know where to start? You can stop by the Paintbar at our HQ to check out the array of Montana Black and Montana Gold spray paint cans for purchase, and see what others are doing on the walls! Follow on Instagram for more photos and updates!

Check out this stunning piece by TAC’s own Paintbar & Installations Specialist Kendel Joseph on our legal wall created as part of his personal portfolio. With permission, Kendel pushed his work outside of the set frame to create a larger-than-life work immersive to the viewer. The work, titled “The Rose That Grew From Concrete,” is a “conversation about rejuvenating and refreshing” during New England spring.

Kendel reflects that “[t]his big skeleton is a piece about that awakening inside of you, waiting to shake the dust off, to make something big and beautiful.” The undead subject represents the isolating and energy-stifling nature of winter - a feeling that is exacerbated as an artist who primarily works on large-scale outdoor pieces.

Though much of the piece is rooted in high-contrast grayscale, peeks of color can be seen shining through - a nod to the title, which references a poem by Tupac Shakur. Shakur’s poem is a meditation on Black excellence being forged despite external circumstances meant to keep people down - something Kendel relates to as a Black man striving towards excellence in an urban environment.

Kendel’s rendering process creates an interplay between the background and foreground as he starts by using diluted paint to create the general form of the work. This process can create unique textures such as drips, with which Kendel hints at the tension between fine art and abstraction.

Kendel is a self-taught artist, born and raised in Providence. He specializes in a highly stylized version of expressionist realism inspired by renaissance-style portraiture and by expressionism found in contemporary arts such as street art and graffiti.

The next time you stroll or drive by the intersection of Broad and Cahir St., check out new utility box artwork created by Annie with artist assist from Katherine Gosnell.

This box is located on one of the city's unseen lines connecting Downtown Providence and Upper South Providence. The theme strives to uplift and celebrate the neighborhood's vibrancy and resilience.

The artwork's theme is “characters in your neighborhood,” referencing the characters from all walks of life that live together in community. The joyful characters on the box offer passersby a smile and a nod.

The piece communicates that there is beauty in imperfection. The characters are smiling and spreading joy regardless of cracks in the bricks and sidewalks.

Annie is a self-taught artist and a local small business owner that pulls from nostalgic imagery from her childhood in hopes to put a smile on someone’s face.

The project was part of a team learning initiative with artwork created & painted by Annie with assistance from Katherine, with project development by Jan Carlos Terrero, Kendel Joseph, Christen Makram, and Brown University intern Natalia Lopez. Founder Yarrow has been working with artists to paint utility boxes since TAC’s early days. As he prepares to transition out of the role of ED this summer, he’s passing his knowledge to new leaders at TAC to build great experiences for artists and community. They’ll build upon the initiative with new box opportunities for youth and adult artists over the next two years.

For Yarrow, utility boxes create multiple points of contact and perspective. Smaller installations foster connections between the city, community, artists, and the media, and boxes offer 3D canvases that can bring color and life to unseen corners of our world.
