On my way to Dallas today with a stop by the office. Nu Skin is peaceful all of the time, but especially early in the morning. Have a great day today!
Welcome to a new day! Make it a great one!
This is what I shared at my father's funeral. I share them on this special day as we express our love for our fathers.
DADS ARE INDESTRUCTIBLE
As sons, we all view our fathers as indestructible. Dads can do anything, fix anything and know everything. My dad lived up to those childhood and adult expectations all the way to his very last breath here on earth.
Over the last couple of weeks, I have had some great father and son moments, private moments, holding my father's hand, expressing our love for each other, sharing regrets that we each had that we wanted to make sure were behind us. He made a point to make sure that each of his children, grandchildren and close friends knew he loved them. He wanted to pass on a thought or a give a hug.
I rarely saw my father cry in my life.. But in his last days, he shed tears a bit more openly. When you were around him at those moments, you felt encircled about by his love.
LESSONS LEARNED
I've been thinking about what I might share this morning for several weeks. I want to share some lessons learned from a great man. I want to share with all of his children--whether dad was your birth father or your father because he encircled you with his love, his lessons touched our lives. I want his many grandchildren and great grandchildren to remember him and share the lessons of a great man and teacher.
PAY IT FORWARD
The legacy of a great teacher is the lives of those he taught.
Over the last few weeks, I've written down a few lessons my father taught me. It wasn't that he said learn this lesson, son, and remember it, rather he would teach quietly by his example.
DEFINING MOMENTS
It is said that it is easier to see a defining moment in the rearview mirror than it it is to see one coming in your windshield, So these are those moments I can now see so clearly in the mirror.
LOVE OTHERS AND EXPRESS LOVE, regardless of circumstances. My dad was a person who openly expressed love to others. He would put his arm around someone's shoulder or give a hug and he would say, "I love you." And they weren't simply words, you knew it in your heart that he loved you. He simply didn't care what your circumstances were, he loved you.
SERVE OTHERS--Whether it was the neighborhood children with go karts or school projects or an individual or family in need, dad's service was done with great happiness because he understood that by serving you, ultimately he was serving God and he loved God with all his heart and being.
Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple made this profound statement
" The only way to be truly satisfied in life is to do what you believe is a great work. And,the only way to do a great work is to love what you do."
Dad's great work was service.
BE INQUISITIVE. As we were driving down from Utah yesterday, I was looking out of the window into the darkness of the desert of Nevada and I was thinking about the hundreds of times we drove that same route as a family. Most people would drive that route straight through and give no thought to side roads, the geography or the history of that route. We all discovered that dad didn't really work on a schedule. If he wanted to learn something or see something, he would pull over and read the signs, drive miles on dirt roads in the desert to see a natural feature. He would teach us by his desire to learn. It never stopped. He always wanted to know more.
There were a few things that stymied him--computers were never his strong suit, and we laughed from time to time. His grandsons would come over or drive down from Utah to help him out of a predicament. He was always wanting to know more.
KEEP MEMORIES AND WRITE NOTES. Dad loved writing notes to people. He loved the written word. For him, a note meant so much more than a phone call. He learned this lesson from his mother, my grandmother. We need to carry on.
I keep a box of note cards in my desk and I send notes to people who have done something or said something that touched me--a lesson learned from my father.
APPRECIATE THE BEAUTY OF THE EARTH. As children, dad would take us out on Sunday drives. I was not necessarily a willing participant because I would rather have been playing baseball or riding bikes with friends, but my dad wanted his children to appreciate the beauty of our surroundings and take care of them.
My most lasting memory of my dad was a moment two weeks before he passed away when I was saying good bye to him. Knowing that his final days in this life were few, I put my arms around him and shared how much I loved him. As i walked towards the door with tears in my eyes, I turned to look at him and he was giving me a "thumbs-up" with tears streaming down his face.

OK, we are just a few days away from the official start of summer or winter if you are in the southern hemisphere. Send me a picture of how you're going to have some fun this summer or winter and I'll pick the two most ingenious pictures--one from the northern hemisphere where we are going into summer and one from the southern hemisphere where you're going into winter (I can't even bear the thought). I have a VERY special surprise that I'll ship directly to your home, just in time for summer--or winter. Have fun. I'll pick the winner tomorrow evening.
By far today is the most beautiful day of the year! Make it a great day! Stay tuned--I have something fun today.
