Have you heard about the new COVID vaccines?
Pfizer and BioNTech (Moderna) have reformulated their vaccines to include protection against the highly contagious COVID Omicron variants that are currently responsible for the high COVID-19 infections across the nation. Both the FDA and the CDC are expected to approve these new vaccines soon and it predicted they will be available around mid-September. This is only a month away.

What does this mean for those of you currently eligible for a booster?
Opinions from experts vary and it is confusing. The current vaccines are still effective in preventing a lot of infections – but the newer vaccines will be much more so. And getting vaccines too close together may mean you don’t get as good a response from your immune system on the second vaccine if too close together. After reviewing the data, we recommend that you wait for the new vaccine in September unless, over the next 4-6 weeks:
1) You are going to be traveling by plane or train; or
2) You are going to be entering into a high-risk situation regarding your health – such as chemotherapy or starting any other drug that suppresses your immune system, or
3) You just want to go ahead and get a recommended booster. We will continue to offer Pfizer Vaccine to you.

What about the new CDC guidelines for Covid?
The CDC issued new guidelines yesterday for preventing the spread of COVID. They are relaxing some of their previous recommendations ( https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/71/wr/mm7133e1.htm ). They continue to stress that if you live in an area with a high rate of COVID you should continue to avoid indoor public spaces without masking up. This advice was for everyone – not just those at high risk. Wake County currently has a high rate of COVID transmission and we have been seeing an increase in hospitalizations over the past few months. It is nothing like last winter but if you are considered at high risk due to age, high risk medical conditions or medications, we encourage you to continue to follow the masking guidelines.
