🤤Releasing tension. That’s the secret to solving jaw pain in so many of our clients. “Temporomandibular Joint Disorder” or TMD is the technical term, but let’s call it what it is, jaw pain and often a fierce headache that comes with it. There are several specific diagnoses in this region, but the most common presentation we see in the clinic is “myofascial pain”, meaning pain referred from tight and irritated muscles. The most common cause? You guessed it, stress. The busier and more distracted we get, the easier it is to develop tension in your muscles which prevents adequate blood flow and compresses joints causing pain. The good news? A solution exists, and it’s both easier and faster than you might expect.
Soft tissue massage can be performed on each of the powerful muscles responsible for creating jaw movement, even then ones where we must work from inside your mouth to access! Identifying which muscles are responsible for a patient’s pain is as easy as selectively applying pressure to each possible culprit systematically. Once identified, we begin with gentle massage and work into more productive deep pressures while the patient focuses on letting go of the tension they’ve been subconsciously building up. This combination of manually working the muscle to decrease tension and improve blood flow, while the patient focuses on relaxing that area, results in profound changes. Once we’ve got the pain decreasing, we can provide self massage techniques that enable our clients to maintain and even build on the progress we’ve made in the clinic while at home.
