Then came our middle son, he was an emergency C-section. His entry into this world was difficult and life-threatening but, he made it. Today, he is an incredible man, husband, father, and wonderful provider for his family. However, his educational journey was a struggle. Academics (especially math) was difficult for him. He was eventually diagnosed with an Auditory Processing Disorder, Dyslexia, Discalculia, and ADHD. I learned more about teaching and education from him than you can imagine!

We also have a wonderful daughter who also had her share of struggles, as she was also diagnosed with an Auditory Processing Disorder. Today, she too is a wonderfully talented young adult enjoying her life in the Pacific Northwest!

Since we were homeschooling, it was a challenge to find a good math program. We found a great one and used it quite successfully for many years. Then, it was decided that there were things we found had worked with our children that weren’t taught anywhere. There were those crazy things you learn that encourage and enable them to learn expecially when they might learn “differently.”

Perceptions Math, the MasterPieces, MasterFractions, and other materials currently sold by Perceptions Math were developed based on over 40 years of experience from watching other not “get math,” teaching my own students with who learned differently, to observing special education and math interventionists try to teach students who don’t “get” math in individual or small group settings. Perceptions Math, the MasterPieces, and the MasterFractions were developed based on research by preeminent math researchers in this country. They were created to provide clear instruction and to meet the Math Practice Standards. Perceptions Math has the key pieces, visual instruction, progress monitoring, specific vocabulary, and teacher supports to give teachers the ability to meet the needs of individual students.

Today, we love teaching teachers how to deliver explicit math instruction using visual representations of mathematical ideas and concepts. I love sharing my joy of math!
