Today, January 5th, is National Bird Day where nature lovers, bird lovers, and bird watchers across the country annually recognize the avian population and the challenges they face.

According to Born Free USA (www.bornfreeusa.org), nearly 12 percent of the world's almost 10,000 bird species are in danger of extinction.

This year, BGAD Land Manager Raysha Childers shared that BGAD is home of a pair of Bald Eagles and a non-confirmed young eagle.

Blue Grass Army Depot appreciates the more than 390 species of wild birds in Kentucky and works closely with KDVA to track and treat them with respect.

So, next time you’re out in BGAD’s restricted zone, keep your eyes peeled for a bald eagle flying or nested in a tree.

January 4th is National CanDo Day. What does this mean? It is a day to focus on everything you CAN DO. Think of today as a day of inspiration – be proud of everything you have accomplished thus far and focus on your future goals. It’s a new year, you can achieve your objectives if you focus on your assets!

BGAD Colleagues, Depot Coworkers…

A near-miss, or “close call,” is a potential hazard or incident that has not yet occurred. The hazard/incident was identified and fixed before it resulted in personal injury or property damage.

Zachary M. Daugherty, BGAD Occupational Safety & Health Specialist, presented Boggs with his award before the start of BGAD’s monthly Safety Council meeting. Boggs received an award certificate for promoting a safe work culture, which came with a 59-minute early dismissal card, and a command coin.

Happy Holidays Everyone!

December is filled with many reasons for festivities, celebrations, activities, and get-togethers.

Today, we recognize Kwanzaa, an annual celebration of African American culture from December 26 to January 1, culminating in a communal feast called Karamu, usually on the sixth day. It was created by activist Maulana Karenga, based on African harvest festival traditions from various parts of West and Southeast Africa.

For more information, visit https://www.officialkwanzaawebsite.org/

The Blue Grass Army Depot is proud of its diversified workforce and welcomes the uniqueness each employee brings to the team. The depot celebrates the varied backgrounds, skills, beliefs, and traditions our employees bring to our workforce in the month of December.

Remember, seek ways to help, not hate. Respect diversity, not division.

“You don’t have to agree with someone to be kind and respectful to them.”

Regardless how you celebrate this holiday season, make sure you spend time with your family and friends and to relax. Please do so safely though, as BGAD needs your skills and contributions in the coming New Year to keep America’s Warfighters functioning at optimal levels.

Happy Holidays!

"Once a battle buddy, always a battle buddy."

During this past week’s holiday luncheon at the Igloo Club, Dustin House, the Maintenance and Demilitarization (M&D) Division Chief, and other M&D supervisors passed out holiday lunches to their workforce within BGAD’s restricted zone.

Workers in the restricted zone rarely come to the Igloo Club for lunch because of the distance, clean-up, and time constraints required to get to the café. House wanted his workers to enjoy the same holiday meal available to all BGAD employees and made plans to haul dozens of meals out to his team, ensuring they got to enjoy the brisket and all the fixins. House and his supervisors went from production building to production building, ensuring everyone who wanted the special meal received one.

We have great BGAD workers who look after each other while serving America’s Joint Warfighters.

For more information on what a “battle buddy” is, search the internet for “What is an Army Battle Buddy.”

Our apologies to the Space Force for missing your birthday yesterday. We strive for perfection here, but often trip over our humanity.

Anyway, happy belated birthday to our military brethren in the US. Space Force who just turned four.

The U.S. Space Force was established Dec. 20, 2019, when the National Defense Authorization Act was signed into law, creating the first new branch of the armed services in 73 years.

The establishment of the USSF resulted from widespread recognition that Space was a national security imperative. When combined with the growing threat posed by near-peer competitors in space, it became clear there was a need for a military service focused solely on pursuing superiority in the space domain.
