Madison County EMS -- Kentucky

We just wanted to make the public aware that our board meeting for this afternoon was canceled.

07/08/2024

We would like to take a moment to recognize our paramedics on this International Paramedics Day. We are proud of the work they do to keep the people of Madison County safe.

07/04/2024

We want to wish everyone a happy and safe Fourth of July.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), fireworks started an estimated 31,302 fires in 2022 and sent over 10,200 people to the emergency room for fireworks related injuries. Remember to be mindful when handling fireworks and sparklers.

We would like everyone to meet Remi. An avid ambulance watcher and patch lover. Remi has stolen the hearts of many first responders in Kentucky and around the world. Our crews often see him outside the University of Kentucky ER sitting in his chair and waving at our trucks. We wanted to show him how much we appreciate seeing his infectious smile and making our days so much better. Paramedics Phelps and Baldwin went to visit him this week. They delivered a bunch of goodies and added our patch to UK EMT Hunter’s awesome blanket that she made. We look forward to seeing him everyday and appreciate his mom for letting us share!

We would like to thank Berea Kentucky Fire Department for assisting Paramedic Baldwin and EMTs Heidkamp and Woolum up the Berea Pinnacles to reach a hiker suffering a medical emergency. Their UTV and timely response helped bring emergency medical care to the patient quickly.

06/17/2024

This afternoon, one of our units stationed in Berea responded to Jackson County to a call for mutual aid. The crew on scene evaluated the patient and determined them to be in critical condition. They treated the patient on scene and called Air Evac Lifeteam 118 West Liberty for rapid transport to a trauma center. We would like to thank Jackson County EMS for allowing us to provide assistance and to Air Evac for transporting our patient to the higher level of care that he needed. Teamwork is an important aspect in EMS and we are proud to work alongside many great agencies.
We also want to give a huge shoutout to Madison County 911 for coordinating with Jackson County and Air Evac!

06/16/2024

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads today. Not all of them can be with their families but their hard work and dedication don’t go unnoticed.

Beat the heat! This week is forecasted to be fairly hot with highs in the 90s. Check out the graphic below from the CDC on how to stay safe in extreme heat. 🔥🌡️

We are very proud to announce our partnership with FOAMfrat to provide all of our employees with quality EMS education free of charge! They offer online CAPCE approved continuing education and refresher courses for our providers.
Our crews also have the option of taking the self-paced critical care paramedic course which would allow them to earn their Critical Care Paramedic endorsement through the Kentucky Board of EMS. Just another way we are sharpening our clinical skills to better serve Madison County.

MCEMS participated in the annual CSEPP decontamination exercise alongside many local, state, and federal agencies. These crews had the opportunity to experience a multiagency response in the event of a county-wide chemical release situation. These exercises ensure that we are prepared for any kind of disaster to keep the community safe.

Did you know it’s national donut day? The Salvation Army in Richmond dropped off some delicious donuts to our crews this morning. Thank you for thinking of us!

Meet the Donut Lassies:
In 1917, The Salvation Army International embarked on a mission to provide spiritual and emotional support for U.S. soldiers fighting in France during World War I. At the personal request of General John J. Pershing, about 250 volunteers traveled overseas and set up small huts near the front lines where they provided soldiers with clothes, supplies, and of course, sweet treats.

Despite discovering that serving baked goods would be difficult considering the conditions of the huts and the limited rations, two officers - Ensign Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance - began frying donuts. These tasty treats boosted morale and won the hearts of many soldiers.

Nicknamed Donut Lassies, the women who served donuts to troops are often credited with popularizing the donut in the United States when the troops returned home from war.

Throughout the 1920s, and into the 1930s when the Great Depression upended countless lives, The Salvation Army continued to sell and donate donuts. When World War II began, volunteers from The Salvation Army once again provided sweet treats to those serving on the front lines, but were now assisted by a new invention - the automatic donut-making machine.

The Salvation Army in Chicago celebrated the first National Donut Day in 1938 to help those in need during the Great Depression and to commemorate the work of the Donut Lassies.

The donut still serves as a symbol and reminder of the comfort. The Salvation Army Donut Lassies provided to soldiers during World War I and World War II through many social service programs still active today.
National Donut Day is held annually on the first Friday in June, and many local Salvation Army locations celebrate the work of the original Donut Lassies by delivering donuts to those in need.

Rebecca Sizemore has been in EMS for 7 years. 5 of those years have been with us at Madison County. She earned her paramedic in 2022 and has been a tremendous asset to us as part of our team. Yesterday, she accepted the Director position at Garrard County EMS and we couldn’t be more proud. We will miss her here at Madison County but will still be working closely with her just one county over. Congratulations Rebecca!

Bright Beginnings Daycare invited us out to their touch-a-truck event yesterday morning. Our EMTs, Owen and Carl, had a great time showing the kids that ambulances aren’t so scary and play a big role during emergencies.
Thank you for having us out and thanks to the parents for allowing us to share these great photos!

CSEPP has provided funds for equipment over the years that have dramatically enhanced our ability to provide care for our patients and community. Those funds along with the wisdom of past and present administrations have created a solid foundation for us to springboard into the future. Here is our current director Tonya Donselman to discuss the benefits of CSEPP. While we are sad to see CSEPP go we are excited to see what the future holds!
