F&R is a proud supporter of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation 's Clean the Bay Day. This past Saturday, volunteers from our Richmond office gathered to celebrate the day by cleaning up Bryan Park.

From the event site: "Since Clean the Bay Day began in 1989, this Virginia tradition has engaged more than 165,000 volunteers who have removed approximately 7.18 million pounds of debris from more than 8,250 miles of land."

Edited to add: Our team reported that their total distance cleaned was two miles, and they collected 166 pounds of debris!

We are proud that our team has made support of this impactful event an annual tradition!

Did you know? Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, originated in the aftermath of the Civil War to honor the fallen soldiers of the Union and the Confederacy. The tradition began in the late 1860s when citizens started decorating the graves of war dead with flowers and flags. The official date was set for May 30, chosen because it was not the anniversary of any particular battle. In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by an act of Congress, with the observance moved to the last Monday in May, allowing for a three-day weekend.

Today, we celebrate Memorial Day to remember and honor all the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. We are grateful for their unwavering commitment; their courage and dedication have helped shape the freedoms we enjoy today.
