Ileen Rathnam retirement party captured by CaruthersWorks Photography. https://caruthers.zenfolio.com/p196773855
Ileen Rathnam has announced her retirement from serving the AIAIC as Executive Director. She will move to a supportive role later this month as she winds down over four years of dedicated service to the AIAIC. During this time, she relocated the chapter office to share space at allied member Community Works Design Group in Riverside, grew membership in the full and associate ranks, launched a successful emerging professionals program, added allied and corporate sponsors, hosted multiple successful Bob Kain Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournaments, endured an unprecedented and greatly disruptive global pandemic, managed the distribution of thousands of dollars in student scholarships, and oversaw student and architect design awards programs. She successfully served at a critical time of transition where the chapter required growth to sustain itself. Ileen leaves the chapter in a forward leaning posture toward continued growth as it further defines its value and worth to the professionals it serves. Please help us all congratulate Ileen with personal notes of thanks. A reception in her honor will be held later this month. Look for the forthcoming announcement shortly.

Join us for AIA Inland California Chapter August Program, Sponsored by Producers Council of Southern California on Wednesday, August 4.
Those gathered on Wednesday, June 23rd for a special AIAIC program, were treated to a presentation of work that never was built by our Chapter centenarian Clare Henry Day, FAIA. Twenty attendees were captivated by this superb storyteller from the greatest generation talk about the war, the great transition from his first year of university at Cincinnati before the war, that was soundly Washington University in St. Louis inspired Beaux Arts (as he put it), to his return from the war to finish his architecture degree at Cincinnati which had transitioned squarely to modernism (because of Hitler's appropriation of formal/classical architecture, again as he put it). He moved to Redlands and build dozens of modern custom homes, and dozens more public buildings. He helped found the AIA IE chapter (as AIAIC was called originally) with other regional heavyweights like Herman Ruhnau and Clinton Marr. He said merging at times with the desert chapter was fun because those guys were wild! He said his mid-century modernism, as we call it now, was a result of his exposure in Europe and the influence of artists like Paul Klee as much as his actual schooling. He wanted to practice a holistic architecture, inside and out. His houses are amazingly complete environments. He shared his boards and drawings and talked about his commissions and philosophy of design, business, and client relations. Born in 1920, Mr. Day is still practicing today, designing houses for friends and clients. We continue to celebrate his contribution to the profession and region. Here are a few excerpts of his talk...
