Congratulations to Alexis Fenger for receiving two separate awards at AAAS Pacific Division in San Diego:

🥇 First place poster presentation and research sectional award in the social sciences, science in society, humanities and science category.

🎖️ AAAS Robert I Larus Award for Best-in-Show/Top poster presentation and research.

Alexis is a third year PhD student in Educational Psychology. She was selected for this procedure awards out of 129 poster presentations this year!!

✨Assistant Professor Alice Lee, Ph.D. was recognized for her research on Black language in the Spring edition of the UCR Magazine. Dr. Lee is committed to educating and bringing awareness to Black language, specifically within schools, and major roadblocks Black students face in the classroom. “Forbidding Black Language in classrooms sets Black students up for failure.” Lee explained.

Join co-editors, José Del Real Viramontes and Marissa Vasquez, as they welcome fellow authors Miguel Ceja, Marina K. Williams, Jannire Ambriz, Oscar Duran, Joe Louis Hernandez, Nancy Acevedo, and Martha Enciso to discuss the release of their new book, Community College and Beyond: Understanding the Transfer Pipeline for Latina/o/x Students. Panelists will discuss the pre-and post-transfer experiences of Latina/o/x students, including formerly incarcerated and system impacted students and students in STEM disciplines. Authors will also highlight institutional efforts to support Latina/o/x community college and transfer students such as culturally-relevant summer programming and honors colleges.

We love a collaborative event! SOE Associate Professor of Teaching Dr. Lussier hosted an event today where students and faculty from the math and education departments came together to talk about how to make math content more accessible to students as part of the New Mathematics Gateway Project funded by the California Learning Lab.

In this workshop presentation, we discussed research that supports the adoption of active learning techniques, how to effectively utilize them within instructional resources such as micro-tutorial videos as part of supporting mathematical learning, and how increased usage of these strategies can enhance both the quantity and diversity of STEM students who successfully participate in STEM.

For newly admitted students, we invite you to stop by Sproul Hall during Highlander Day tomorrow to speak with Dr. Lussier about STEM teaching and find out how you can get involved in this research at UCR!

Please join us for a screening of the award-winning documentary, Autism Goes to College, co-sponsored by the SEARCH Autism Center at UC Riverside and SCDD. We are showing this film in honor of April's Autism Acceptance Month.

The documentary follows five students on the autism spectrum, as they navigate college life. The students share their unique journeys -- how they got to college, the challenges (and joys) while there, and what they aspire to do after. The film will be followed by a Q&A session, including one of the film “stars,” the film’s Director, Executive Producer, and the Patricia Herrera from SCDD.

⭐️ Thank you to everyone who attended the SOE Graduate Qualitative Research Workshop led by Dr. Alice Lee last week!
⭐️ During the workshop, students had the opportunity to engage in one-on-one conversations regarding their own research projects as they embark on the iterative process of qualitative research with faculty members, Dr. Michael II Moses, Dr. Amos Lee, Dr. Lorena Gutierrez and Dr. Alice Lee.
⭐️ In four self-identified groups students discussed: 1) refining their research question, 2) considering how to implement methods into their projects and the implications of those methods, 3) how well theories frame their study and considering new ones faculty members suggest based on individual projects, and 4) ways in which students can analyze data they have already collected and practice new strategies as they continue collecting data. We hope to see you at the next one!
