Every year the Associated Students of Riverside City College give us an opportunity to honor one of our students with the “Student of Distinction” award. This year we are honored to present Jules McDonald with the 2024 Student of Distinction Award on behalf of RCC Dance.

Over the past two years, Jules has displayed unwavering dedication, creativity, and immense enthusiasm in developing their skills as a choreographer and performing dance artist. Jules stands out as a natural leader among their peers. Their exceptional skill level, tenacity, and thought-provoking ideas have been a palate refresher for our program. This has been especially evident this year, as Jules took on the role of "Student Director" for the Celebrate Dance Concert, orchestrating a memorable and impactful concert for their peers and the community.

Jules has performed in every one of our dance concerts, has choreographed multiple times for our program including summer showcase, celebrate dance and a special honorary gala event for La Sierra University. Jules has been featured in faculty work at RCC, student work at the American College Dance Association Conference, and guest work at Redlands University.

Moreover, Jules's dedication and talent have opened doors beyond the sphere of our program. Through a partnership we have with Christian Arts & Theatre in Corona, Jules secured an internship in the fall of 2023. Since then, they have continued to excel, now serving as an assistant director and choreographer for their shows and instructor for beginning-level courses.

Jules's journey from a casual observer in a dance appreciation class to a powerhouse in the dance program is nothing short of absolutely remarkable. Their passion, talent, and dedication are truly deserving of recognition… AND because we are dancers, their work is deserving of some celebratory jazz hands!

In recognition of their outstanding contributions and their role as an inspiring figure within our dance program, it is our privilege to present Jules McDonald with this well-deserved Student Distinction award.

Celebrate Dance 2024 Promo: De Colombia Para Ti by Kelly Alvarez 05/10/2024

https://youtu.be/9xeTWsajxIA

Wrapping up this beautiful week featuring first time Celebrate choreographer, Kelly! Enjoy =) We are just 6 days away from opening night... buy your tickets today!

De Colombia Para Ti

Choreographer:Kelly Alvarez (she/her)
Music: Kelly Alvarez in collaboration with Dan Hill; sample of “Chemapale” by Checo Acosta
Dancers: Dalia Popok Romero, Darren André Ayala, Dulce Hernandez, Emely Aguilera, Jerrae Barnes, Jonathan Ramirez, Jules McDonald, Kassandra Romero, Landon Avery T., Leiah Holmes, Tiffany Garcia, Wyatt Smith

“El Mapalation” is an Afro-Colombian inspired dance in the genre of Mapale. Mapale is a traditional coastal dance that was brought up by slaves and represents fisher men and the eroticism in the relationship between the working men and women at the time. Aside from playing with those traditional elements of Mapale there will be the exploration of community and conversations between the dancers and musicians throughout the dance, but mostly in the cyphers. The idea that both the dancers feed off the musicians for energy and the musicians from them.

Celebrate Dance 2024 Promo: Morhisoul Roaring by Jaime Carriedo 05/08/2024

https://youtu.be/wSWD0MSdrgM

Happy Wednesday friends. We are only eight days away from opening night! Today we are excited to share behind the scenes with first time Celebrate choreographer, Jaime!

Morphisoul Roaring
Choreographer: Jaime Carriedo (he/him)
Music: Jaime Carriedo in collaboration with Dan Hill
Dancers: Alejandro Diaz Juarez, Baylee Perez, Chloe Jimenez, Dinora Gomez, Kenisha Garcia, Lina Benjelloun, Sky Littlefield, Yesenia Espinoza

“Morphisoul Roaring” is a piece inspired by the concept “survival of the fittest.” In the piece I explore different motifs that bring out emotions of intensity in my piece with that I also explore the idea of there being a threat which builds tension. My intention for this piece is to have consistency while letting sound be the driving contrast of this artistic organism.

Celebrate Dance 2024 Promo: Where the F### is the Bunny? by Jonathan Ramirez 05/06/2024

https://youtu.be/CzPveaN7lJY

Happy Monday friends! We are excited to kickstart the week with second-time Celebrate student choreographer, Johnny!

Where the F # # # is the Bunny?
Choreographer: Jonathan Ramirez (he/him)
Music: Dan Hill
Dancers: Antonio “Tony” Aguirre, Baylee Perez, Bonnie Barrett, Chloe Jimenez, Dalia Popok Romero, Darren André Ayala, Dinora Gomez, Emely Aguilera, Jacqueline Chumacero, Kassandra Romero, Kelly Alvarez, Leticia “Lucy” Bosneanu, Lina Benjelloun, Paulina Cruz Segura, Shadawn Branch, Taylor Hill, Tiffany Garcia, Vanessa Lizbeth Z., Wyatt Smith, Yesenia Espinoza

“Where the F # # # is the Bunny?” plays off the whimsical image of the white rabbit portrayed in the various works of film and literature. This unserious, yet serious, piece aims to create a fun, chaotic, and eye catching visual being enhanced by the ominous music filled with very earthy beats and rigid chords to add a sense of drama keeping the viewer on the edge of their seat. Using a large cast of 20, along with the use of heavy traffic, different ranges of variations of movement, and use of space, the dance creates very interesting and almost satisfying illusions on the eye.

Vices; O how they linger
Choreographer: Landon Avery T. (he/him)
Music: Dan Hill
Dancers: Ashton King, Chloe Jimenez, Dulce Hernandez, Jonathan Ramirez, Jules McDonald, Julio Hernandez, Kassandra Romero, Kelly Alvarez, Tiffany Garcia

“O Demons, where art thou mercy? I am conflicted in the way you affect how I perceive. O how I struggle to define if you are present to help me grasp the light or bask in the dark. O lover, do you see me not as myself; or as a mere depiction of these demons?”

This story goes to tell how a relationship can be altered by the demons/baggage we face daily in our relationships. Envy, Pride, Wraith, Gluttony, Greed, Lust, and Sloth; how do these entities embody these demons that we battle every day to embrace and shelter our loved one?

Celebrate Dance 2024 Promo: the labor of dignity by Dey De Guzmán 04/30/2024

https://youtu.be/NMoxiWRJ5LQ

As we wind down on this first beautiful sunny day of the week, please enjoy today's featured choreographer, Dey De Guzmán!

the labor of dignity
Choreographer: Dey De Guzmán (they/them)
Music: “Unruly Fruit” written and performed by Dey De Guzmán
Music Arrangement: Dan Hill
Dancers + Collaborators: Dalia Popok Romero, Darren André Ayala, Jennifer E. Lopez Diaz, Taylor Hill, Tommy Jurado

“the labor of dignity” is an exploration of the ways dignity lives in and moves through our bodies, both individually and collectively. What and who gets in the way? And how do we find our way(s) back, alone, together when it has been lost? Set to a self- written song, that is the impetus for much of the movement/story, it is a celebration of unapologetic embodiment, an assertion of imperfect aliveness that persists despite all the odds. Both sentimental and fierce, rhythmic and soft, “the labor of dignity” seeks to break apart expectations and integrate binaries, to find a place of simply moving, and existing with dignity.
