Let’s go Spirit Sprinter’s Sata Huri RUN STRONG 💪🏼 🦅🪶💕
Please Be aware of Road Closures this weekend!
The upcoming River Run will be taking place on May 18th, 2024 and will host about 85 people (runners & event staff included). The race features a view of the Catawba River, a run through the old Catawba Reservation, and the challenge of those famous hills behind the Longhouse. The event starts and finishes at the CIN Longhouse. 996 Avenue of the Nations Rock Hill SC 29730. We hope you can come join the fun! Road Closures may impact you: Most road closures and detours will be in effect between the hours of 8:30am to 10:30am. The roads that will be impacted will be: portion of Ave of the Nations and Passmore and all of Charley Horse Road. Agricultural Land Assignment designees and businesses located near the course are urged to plan and to be aware of road closure schedules and alternate access routes. At 8:00a.m., police and event personnel will implement a soft closure along the entire course (some traffic may be able to pass, but drivers should expect to wait while the course is being set up). All streets along the course will fully close at 8:30am for the race to begin at 9:00a.m. The streets will open on a rolling basis as soon as the runners and walkers have passed, and all course support materials have been removed. The race may also impact your animals, so we ask that your pets are safely constrained for safety and protection of them, the race participants, and others. Race participants will be asked to run along the designated race route. In addition, the Race Committee and volunteers will do everything to respect the community. We will remove any garbage from the race along the course and at the assigned water stations. Thank you for your support and encouragement! Please call Tolani Franks (803) 280-2545 or Amanda Parker (803) 616- 2047 if you need additional information after reviewing the enclosed course map.
In partnership with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the Catawba Nation Wellness Department is hosting a Hunter Safety Education Class on Saturday, August 17th at 9 am in the Round Room at the Longhouse (996 Avenue of the Nations, Rock Hill, SC 29730). Non-tribal families are welcome to attend this community event. Catawba citizens who pass the course test at the event can apply for their lifetime Catawba License at no cost. This license includes freshwater and saltwater fishing privileges and is valued at over $1,200.00 for in-state residents.
Residents and nonresidents born after June 30th, 1979, must complete a Hunter Safety Education course before a hunting license can be obtained in South Carolina. This free, eight-hour, instructor-led classroom course concludes with a test to pass the course. The South Carolina Hunter Education Class is recommended for students aged 12 and above, who possess good reading and comprehension skills, and have some firearm and hunting knowledge or experience. SCDNR does not discourage any age from attending the class, however, only children aged 10 and above may take the final exam. Meet the Wellness Department!
We are excited to announce that the Catawba Nation's Division of Health & Human Services has a new program to serve tribal households called Nųti Yαpę (Morning Sun) Tribal Home Visiting. This program has been in the planning stages since July 2022 and is now ready to launch services. Input from the community and collaboration with other departments has guided the creation of this program from start to finish. The Dihé (Aunt in Catawba) from the home visiting program provides support to tribal households with pregnant women and/or young children up to age 3. Some ways that the Dihé provides support are through education, cultural connections, developmental screenings, breastfeeding support, connections to needed resources, and regular community activities. These visits can be held in the home, in a private space at the Lodge, or wherever you are most comfortable.
If you would like to find out more or would like to participate, you can call, text, or email the Program Manager, Hilary Harris at 803-389-4698 or [email protected]
