While we do not directly treat pain, we understand that by improving muscle function, we can reduce pain, and that is the goal of MAT.
When the muscles have a strong neurological connection, there is an increase in muscle spindle sensitivity. With increased spindle sensitivity, the associated muscle is able to contract efficiently in order to tolerate greater amounts of force and protect the body from injury.
It is important to note that there is an inverse relationship between mechanoreception and nociception. Therefore, when the sensitivity of the muscle spindle (mechanoreceptor) decreases due inflammation, the sensitivity of the nociceptors (pain receptors) increase. Thus, when there is muscle inhibition, it takes less physical stress to create a pain response.
Once muscles are activated, the result is an increase in muscle spindle sensitivity and a decrease in nociceptor sensitivity.

WHAT IS MAT?
Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT) is a revolutionary approach to the assessment and correction of muscular imbalances, joint instability, and limitations in range of motion of the body. MAT doesn’t address the pain and tightness, it addresses the CAUSE of both. Using a combination of MAT specific assessment protocols, muscle tests, palpation techniques and isometrics, MAT will restore the neurological function of muscles, improving their contractile efficiency so they fire on demand and can tolerate higher force loads. MAt is designed to address and correct different muscular issues and muscle imbalances that affect people of all ages and lifestyles.
