29 Aug. 1965: The Gemini 5 spacecraft is brought aboard the recovery ship, USS Lake Champlain after a nearly 8-day mission. Retrofire having been initiated over Hawaii, the astronauts controlled the reentry, creating drag and lift by rotating the capsule. Due to a computing error, the crew splashed down 80 miles (130 km) short of the planned landing point in the Atlantic Ocean. Although the computer had worked perfectly, a programmer had entered the rate of Earth’s rotation as 360° per 24 hours instead of 360.98°.
