Instead of giving up, I decided, with the support of the community around me, to go full steam ahead and give it everything I've got. What have I got to lose, really?

Happy December and happy Friday! I'm excited to officially announce the Intro to Fitness course at Kaleo Fitness starting on January 12th.

Over the course of 6 weeks, you will learn all about the basics of strength training, including a proper warm up and cool down. You will learn about using different types of weights, training your core (it's not just about sit ups!), and what the heck balance training is.

Each week we will review an aspect of training and then put it into practice with a sweat session. On the last day of the course we will put it all together with a full body workout.

I'm happy to answer any questions that you may have. Let's get moving!

Let me tell you a story… In high school and college I was never the skinny kid, but I managed my weight ok. However, in my early and mid 20’s, I made some bad decisions and ended up overweight and miserable.

Eventually I had enough of my own BS and joined a gym. Though it wasn’t until a personal trainer approached me with an encouraging smile that I realized that maybe I could do this and turn my life around. She believed in me when I couldn’t believe in myself.

My fitness journey has been filled with ups and downs throughout the years, but I stuck with it and am so grateful I have …. I have run several half marathons and 10ks, got back into horseback riding, and joined a roller derby team which has become my passion.

Let me reintroduce myself... It's been awhile and I wanted to take the time to share a little bit about the person behind Tornado Alli Fitness.

I've been a Certified Personal Trainer for over two years now, but I've been involved in fitness for over 15 years. When I started going to the gym in my mid twenties, I hired a personal trainer and I was hooked. From spending time trying new things and asking questions in the gym, to running half marathons, to playing roller derby, I found that fitness was my passion. I also love helping others and personal training is the best of both worlds.

I firmly believe that core and balance should be the basis of any workout program and you can then build from there. And we can't forget our friends mobility and flexibility. I also believe that strength training and endurance are key to strong muscles, bones, and a healthy heart. I love helping clients feel strong and capable of anything.

Besides a personal trainer who am I? I am a wife, stepmom, dog mom, athlete, derby skater, and friend. I believe in making time for laughter, hugs, and Bulgarian Split Squats.

Sara came to me 6 months ago looking to lose weight and build muscle. She continues to show up and put in the work, giving it her all during every single workout. From Bulgarian Split Squats to planks, and everything in between, Sara has shown me there's nothing she can't accomplish when she puts her mind to it.

Rest... It's such a simple word, but often so hard to grasp. It's important for physical recovery and mental health, though too often overlooked.

Friday I woke up exhausted. After completing my training sessions, I came home and laid down. I had absolutely zero energy to get up. My body was telling me something. I rested for the rest of the day and thought I'd be good to go Saturday.

I was wrong. My body and mind were craving more. Although it was mentally hard to stay home, I gave my body what I truly believe it needed. I'm so glad I did. I woke up today feeling less tired and in a better mood and looked forward to going to the gym.

Moral of the story, listen to your body and yes, your mind too. Rest is oh so important.

I braced myself for a lot of hurdles during the road to recovery from a sprained ankle. For some reason, I hadn't thought through the endurance piece.

I hopped on the rowing machine and was immediately humbled. My normal 8 min 30 sec for 2k meters turned into 9 minutes, and I fought for every second.

This is a great lesson in humility and patience. When you come back from an injury, a break from working out, or even start on your fitness journey for the first time, be patient and give yourself grace. You CAN and WILL do amazing things, but it will take time and a lot of hard work to get there.

Let me tell you about my client, Sara. When she first started training with me about 3 months ago, we tried Bulgarian split squats. As determined as she was, it was extremely challenging and it was hard for her even holding on to the rack.

Now, look at her go! Sara has worked so hard, including on that core and balance. I am so proud of her progress. Every session she shows up ready to work and gives 110%. I'm excited to see what she accomplishes next!

We have goals, yes, but we can't forget to celebrate the accomplishments in between.
